[opensuse] Linux-to-Linux alternatives to XDMCP what run in a window instead of tty8?
Listmates, Are there any alternatives to XDMCP for linux to linux desktop sharing that can run in a window instead of a full tty that run as fast as XDMCP? I know about tightvnc, NX, freeNX client, ssh x11 forwarding, but I am looking for something that doesn't take the compression penalty. Running XDMCP to a linux box or running rdesktop to a windows box provides speed equivalent to sitting at the actual remote desktop. All other linux to linux clients I have used show significant screen refresh/mouse slowness that I would like to find an alternative too. I am quite happy with XDMCP, but I would like to find something like it that will run in a window so I'm not stuck on a separate tty for the session. If there was rdesktop to linux, that would be ideal, but so far I haven't stumbled across the magic application. Anybody know of any other possible solutions? The encryption is not a problem, the sessions will be to my kids boxes so unless someone is looking to steal the saved files from the Mr. Potato Head game, I'm good. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. You can run an xdmcp session in a window. Look at xnest in the package xorg- x11-server-extra. It's as easy as "Xnest :1 -broadcast" (or -query <remote xdmcp server>)

Not sure what you mean here. The "compression penalty" usually speeds things up dramatically. I have run NX over very low bandwidth connections, with the same feeling as with a local login. Thanks Anders, I'll take a look. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Anders, I'm running into a bit of trouble using Xnest. It looks like it could be IPV6 related or a font issue. When I try to connect, it seems to connect, I get a window with the default gray hatch background, but no session. The console output is: 21:41 alchemy:~> Xnest :1 -query ecstasy _XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6 _XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inet6/alchemy:1 _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inet6 XDMCP warning: INET6 UDP socket creation failed Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/TTF/, removing from list! Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/OTF, removing from list! XDM: too many retransmissions, declaring session dead FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc:unscaled" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing. Sorry -- Never mind (slaps self figuratively) DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="no" in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager :-( screenshot: http://nirvana/download/screenshots/X11/Xnest800.jpg (47k) Also, is there a reason that Xnest running in a window is much less responsive than XDMCP running on tty8? It makes sense that since there is much more going on visually in a windowed environment, that performance would take a hit, but this is a BIG hit. Xnest running windowed doesn't feel any more responsive than tightVNC, but XDMCP flies just like I'm sitting at the remote keyboard. All the testing with the different remote display managers and rdesktop (for windows), etc. from the same laptop shows the following performance results: Access: Performance: ------------- -------------------------------------- XDMCP Excellent - no delays, just like being at the remote keyboard. rdesktop (windows) Excellent - no delays, just like being at the remote keyboard. Xnest OK - noticeable delays on menu and window drawing. Benefit of using native X server on remote system. vncviewer OK - noticeable delays on menu and window drawing. Drawback of requiring separate vncserver to be started. Anybody know any tricks to speed Xnest up? I've tried setting "-depth 16" to cut down on the color depth, but the server will not start. I guess you are stuck with the native depth of the remote server?? Other than that, Xnest works great! -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
