[opensuse] xfce on 10.2
I want to use xfce as a window manager on opensuse 10.2 I've installed it on a low powered system with the option for minimal X - this installs fvm2 as the window manager. The primary function will be to play a large collection of ogg files with madman. I don't need, and the system won't support, a hightly integrated desktop like kde or gnome, but I would like something more covenient than fvwm2. I want to use xfce. I've installed the xfce files from http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/repositories/X11:/xfce/SUSE_Linux_10.0/ The system uses xdm to automatically start an fvm2 system. How do I get xfce to work on this system? I know I should be editing something in /etc/X11 - but not sure. thanks, Gord -- -- Gordon J. So... why did you install the packages for 10.0? There are packages in that repo for 10.2 and it's in the released version of 10.2 as well. -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org http://usr-local-bin.org GNOME for openSUSE: http://repos.opensuse.org/GNOME:/ Help end poverty: http://oxfam.org.uk/in -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'd suggest to use http://software.opensuse.org/download/X11:/xfce/openSUSE_10.2/. 10.0 RPMs on openSUSE 10.2 are not a really good idea. :)

Setting DEFAULT_WM="startxfce4" in /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager should help. If not: $ cp .xinitrc.template .xinitrc And then replace "exec $WINDOWMANAGER" by "exec startxfce4". HTH. Regards, Bernhard

You could start with http://www.xfce.org/index.php?page=documentation&lang=en#start and | or http://www.xfce.org/documentation/docs-4.2/ It heavily depend on how you made xdm to login automaticly, anyway you need to start startxfce4 in order to start xfce4 You probably want to edit /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager Hope it will help. Pavel: How much work would it be to get xfce to be one of the standard suse supported desktops and perhaps drop one of the older ones not currently under active development? Xfce is really nice for low power machines, and machines you want to boot really fast. The problem seems to be that once you install it, you are kind of on your own getting the menus to work because its not integrated very well into Suse menu maintenance system. If you install a new package, it usually shows up in kde, but seems never to appear in xfce. Those other guys do support it and they do a pretty good job of keeping the menuing systems in sync between kde/xfce. (You know, those other guys... that *ubuntu bunch. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Not much, please help us: http://en.opensuse.org/X11:xfce

You cannot do this, because those one are used by SuSE developer ;)

We are aware of it.

You are right. XFCE evolved from "guru WM" to "common-userl WM". When new version 4.4 will move to stable (for 10.3) XFCE will get much more attention.

No, i do not. I know that menu in 4.2 (version in 10.1 and 10.2) is generated using script wrote by one of our developers, because xfce 4.2 did no supported FHS standards. But in 4.4 (for now in BuildService) XFCE support FHS much better. And menus should be without problems. -- Pavel Nemec Software Engineer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SuSE CR, s.r.o. e-mail: pnemec@suse.cz Lihovarska 1060/12 tel:+420 284 028 981 190 00 Praha 9 fax:+420 296 542 374 Ceska republika http://www.suse.cz

Is that accessible for testing by Joe User? Via Rpms or only tar balls? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Yep, I can't remember if it's on the non-OSS add-ons or the packman site (via yast/yum/zen which ever). I have it installed and I;m in it as I write. It's is a bit flaky in regards to themes and Icons, but overall not bad. The KDE and GNOME menus load o'k as well. Could still use a bit of work IMHO but overall it's nice. Cheers, Curtis. - -- Spammers Beware: Trespassers will be shot, survivors will be shot again! Like the song say: "Everything's 'Zen'... I was referring to version 4.4 which is in the build service,, not the version on the current release, which is either 4.2 or 4.3. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
