[opensuse] Bios update with openSUSE?
Looked into subject line and found that the only way would be Dos or Windos. Having a windows7 copy just and only for such things I had a look into the bios details. No luck. The problem of any distinct Bios owner I used the service of "eSupport.com ". It software really discovered the bios origin with ease. They found me an update and I started looking into the update process. The readme file gave details which included that a floppy should be used in the process. No floppy so I asked the so called technical service of the eSupport. Nonsense answer back that it most probably was an autoexec.bat file (wrong, was a run.bat) and no solution for something more of this time, a memory stick. run.bat has the following text: @ECHO OFF ECHO. ECHO This program will create the software diskette. ECHO. ECHO Press the CTRL+C key combination to terminate! ECHO. PAUSE ECHO. ECHO Please insert a blank diskette into the floppy drive! ECHO. ECHO WARNING: All DATA on the diskette will be DELETED in the process! ECHO Press the CTRL+C key combination to terminate! ECHO. ECHO Press any key to continue . . . CALL DISKIMG.EXE RAWRITE -f DISK.IMG -d A: Copy autoexec.bat A: Copy config.sys A: Copy err_lev.bat A: Copy fdxxms.sys A: Copy findramd.exe A: Copy tdsk.exe A: Copy SW.EXE A: ECHO. ECHO Process Completed Successfully..... ECHO. ECHO Press any key to exit the program..... PAUSE :ENDMSG Has been a long time since I played around with bat files (DrDos) so I do not trust myself with changing it for the use with a mem stick. No idea where winblows hides the memstick, there naming conventions and if they still use the complete set of Dos commands in a Windows7 environment. RAWRITE -f DISK.IMG -d A: ...
dd fulfills the same purpose in Linux as RAWRITE does booted to DOS. Where is this DISK.IMG from, the web site of the PC maker whose system you're trying to flash? If not, I would be extremely leery of using it for flashing.
Copy autoexec.bat A: Copy config.sys A: Copy err_lev.bat A: Copy fdxxms.sys A: Copy findramd.exe A: Copy tdsk.exe A: Copy SW.EXE A:
You, or someone here, may need to examine the content of these .sys and .bat files to discern what the .exe files do, then copy whichever may be required to perform the flash. The reason for using a DOS floppy to do BIOS updates is about ensuring that no device drivers are loaded that could conflict with the BIOS update utility. To do that doesn't require a floppy, only that the boot device has an empty CONFIG.SYS and nothing potentially conflicting gets loaded as a TSR. So, it's safe to just not have a CONFIG.SYS and an AUTOEXEC.BAT with nothing but @echo off in it (if desired, to avoid the set time and date delay before the DOS prompt appears) on whatever bootable media you please. For systems with no floppy drive I have DOS installed in this configuration on spare PATA and SATA HDs. I put whichever BIOS update utility is required along with the binary to be flashed on the appropriate HD, attach the HD to the PC that needs the update, boot it, and flash it. Similarly one could install FreeDOS on USB for this purpose, but for safety I would disable the PC's HD(s) due to potential for drive letter confusion. Usually all that's necessary to flash successfully via DOS is some media to boot an empty CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT DOS, plus a flash executable, plus the new BIOS image file. How you get there is usually flexible. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. The question remains. If eSupport.com is not the web site of the maker of his puter... -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello, Can't help with the .bat file but BIOS upgrade for many desktop mainboards is possible through the console (if you have the right BIOS image). You will need the flashrom package which is available from the Packman repo. For more information see www.flashrom.org and the man page of flashrom. Regards, I. Petrov On 05/11/2015 08:19 AM, C.
