In /etc/inittab there should be an entry along the lines of: id:5:default: this specifies the runlevel to boot up to. Just change the 5 to a 3. Note that if you specify a default display manager like KDM in /etc/rc.config it will override this and set the boot level back to 5 after running SuSEconfig. Tim Harrell

How do I set Suse to start in init 3 automatically without running X?
Thanks Ray Booysen

Change DISPLAYMANAGER to console in /etc/rc.config and then run SuSEconfig. This sets to runlevel 2. M

This is done pretty quick in yast also. inside yast go to system administration then login configuration. change from graphical to ASCII. that will let you boot to the console. jack malone Network Administrator EAST TEXAS LIGHTHOUSE FOR THE BLIND dba HORIZON INDUSTRIES 903-595-3444 http://www.horizonind.com
