Re: [SLE] 2.6.1 kernel, "request_module: failed", modutils
Re: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-Jan/2709.html Joe, My original posting describes the problem, which in summary is that something in either modutils or module-init-tools puts out lots of "request_module: failed" messages, making booting very very slow. I have a SCSI card with nothing attached to it. I am using the kraxel RPMs, including the kernel RPMs. I don't understand the 2.6 documentation well enough to compile my own kernel and get ReiserFS, SCSI, ACPI, ALSA, DRM/DRI, etc. all working and stable on the first try, and anyway, it's the SUSE RPMs that I want to test, not the stock kernel. See http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-Jan/1682.html and http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-Jan/2551.html and scan http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-Jan for "Leopardi". Sorry to have a fractured thread like this, but this mailing list is way too high volume for me to stay subscribed for more than a few minutes at a time, so I subscribe, send my question, and look at the archives for an answer. Unfortunately, the answer is always another question, which I am usually late in answering myself. But at least I don't get 500 email messages from the list while waiting for the thread to finish.
Have you reported your problems. He is making them available to test and fine tune AFAIK.
Where do I report problems? Do I just send an email message to Gerd Knorr? Or is the SUSE feedback email address the correct channel? This time, I will stay on the list till the thread resolves, and let you know how many email messages it takes. Best regards

dmesg should give more info, as well as /var/log/boot.msg.

OK

Fair enough. I had trouble back at test11 with the kraxel kernel, but when I went to the vanila kernel, it compiled and worked OK. I added some of the patches from the kraxel kernel (got them from the src.rpm), and have since upgraded to 2.6.1 and alsa 1.0.1. I am using 8.2, with the kraxel modutils, and I don't think they are the problem. I suspect a patch added to the vanila kernel. BTW, compiling a 2.6 kernel is actually easier than before. Just execute make in the source tree and that will do all but install the kernel. make xconfig gives an easy to follow configure tool to get it configured correctly. You could use the .config from kraxel. Bur I digress, you want to use/test the kraxel kernel.

either would probably be OK. You could just report it to Gerd Knorr (and if you get a reply it is a plus, but don't try to get support. I am sure he is busy. Joe, Thanks. I said I'd count messages. 63 messages on the mailing list between my post and your response. That's probably because I'm in Australia and most subscribers to this list are not. I think I'll leave it at that for the moment. I will be building a new Athlon 64 based PC soon and need to concentrate on getting SUSE 9.0 to work on the new PC.
