[opensuse] Missing i686 packages from download.opensuse.org
Hi, Any particular reason there are no i686 rpms available from download.opensuse.org? http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.2/repo/oss/suse/ I realize they come on the isos, but it might be nice for network or in place upgrades. Why do you need i686? (Ok, there are a few like glibc.) i586 works for everyone.

That's a question I've wondered about - If we have a 686 system wouldn't the 686 packages be better than the 586?

I have read here the difference is so slight that it isn't worth it for most packages. I always try to get the i686 versions, too. I notice quite often that they are more seamless to run than the i586 versions. I'm guessing there's some compilation which takes into account the newer processors. I suppose it is more of a "seat of the pants" type feeling and I doubt I'd be able to document it so I expect a bunch of hardcore geeks to come back and tell me I'm wrong and that I should just be using assembler programs written for the 8086 in commandline since I'd be better off anyway. -- kai www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Right, glibc as well as db come for i686 on the cds. I'm just curious as to why they are on the cds and not in the internet installation source. Wade -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Eh? For one thing, I try not to mistake what does happen for what's supposed to happen. This installation is an upgraded from RC1, from beta2, from beta1 from alpha5) all based on downloaded DVD images. I added Guru's RPM, Packman and the two Installation Repositories from Mirrors.Kernel.org and updated all the installed packages. The only 686-specific packages among them were a few media-oriented ones from the Packman repository. Perhaps the new packages haven't made it to Mirrors.Kernel.org, yet?

Oh, it's not the surname. Schwartz means "black," Schulz means "protector," or something of that ilk. Sadly, it shares a root with the first word of SS, or Schutzstaffel. Instead, let's think of Charles Schulz, may he rest in peace.

According to the etymologies I've seen, Schulze is a shortened form of Schultheiss, which literally means, roughly, the one who orders debts to be collected (Schuld = debt, related to English should). Schutz derives from a word meaning to contain or damn in (water), related to English shut. The office of Schultheiß or Schulze (schout in Dutch) is a lot like that of the mediaeval sheriff in England.
Schutz derives from a word meaning to contain or damn in (water), related to English shut.
That's one meaning, but another one (a lot more common) is that of 'protection'. ("Darf ich Ihnen Schirm und Schutz anbieten?", R.W. Your doctor needs to learn about mammalian physiology. Carbohydrates are the primary macronutrient for supplying metabolic energy. Using proteins as an energy source places a excessively high load on the kidneys to process all the unneeded nitrogenous compounds produced when amino acids are metabolized for the purpose of providing cellular metabolic energy. Using fats to supply energy is also problematic, mostly in terms of vascular health is concerned.
