FadMart - http://www.fadmart.com - An Associate of the World's Largest Store! Well, then, I'd like to suggest you refer to www.suse.com and look for their how-to & FAQ area. There's a fair amount on samba. That's how I got mine up & operational.

Scott, what they are all trying to tell you is that it's a PITA to do the install from a tar.gz. So I'll give you a little "short" list of steps you will have to go through, generally, and you'll still need to do some reading to get it all done right. Here goes: 1. Untar the file. That's like saying unzip the file. The easy way to do that is from Konqueror, click on the tarbal and konqui will show you a folder. It aint untarred yet! You simply drag that folder somewere and it is untarred by magic. 2. I usually put that folder in /usr/src. DragnDrop. BUT, unless you are running Konqi in superuser mode you wont be able to drop the folder there. Users wont have write permission for that location. I solve it by using superuser mode. There are other ways but that will give you someting to figure out. 3. When you get the folder where you want it, then you need to compile and install it. Always read the README and the INSTALL files in the untarred folder. They usually tell you what you need to do although it is in code! 4. If you see a generic install instruction then you must use the command line, - I use bash- to do the deeds. Oh I forgot to tell you, you need to make sure you have a bunch of things installed like make, gcc and a bunch of other stuff I cant remember. More reading required. Now you should be getting the idea why no one has told you what you need to do! 5. From the command line, when you are in the folder you drug to wherever, you next do three things, at least. a. ./configure b. make c. make install If all goes well all you have left to do is figure out where in hell it all went! Quite often the executable/binary goes into /usr/bin, sometimes it goes into /usr/local/bin. It's all black magic! I realize this is all cryptic but it is complex and god help you if something goes wrong, and it will sooner than later. After you try this a few times you will learn to search for rpm files so you dont have to go through all this crap! Now you know why some folks say Linux is not ready for the desktop. It can be a bitch! BUT it can be a lot of fun and you will learn a lot too. Kinda like building your own car so you can go to the store. I hope I haven't frightened you away from all this fun. I have said enough to get a bunch of people to jump in and defend/attack linux and you will learn from that, too. Now there are a lot of places to get familiar with cause they have done all this finger magic for you. usr-local-bin, packman are just two excellent sources of rpm's. That's enough to either scare you away or get you started. Good luck and enjoy it. Richard

Save yourself a lot of time and frustration and just download the rpms pertinent for your version from ftp://ftp.sernet.de/pub/samba/ You will be glad you did. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM.
