why is everything about Linux a p*** off
Well it took me a while to install Netscape 6 on Suse 6.4 were I could done it in a fraction of the time, like 2 or 3 minutes for windows a good 30 minutes for Linux, getting rid of Netscape 4.76 was the main reason I would like to talk my friends into going Linux, but if I do I am going to get bogged down with phone calls, how do you do this? how do you do.... Now I learn I have to go on line with my ISP BEFORE I start Netscape #6 otherwise I can not send or receive Email, and it is costing me money to log on to my other "Clear" ISP account while Netscape #6 is loading Even Netscape #6 is a worry, while it makes Netscape look like rubbish. you have to activate a account with Netscape, and get a password you will never remember, why can't they tie in password with email address? COME ON NETSCAPE "LINUX" USERS DO NOT NEED THIS RUBBISH Typed from windows were everything goes faster even with the more crashes, it still worth better than going to Linux.

Use wvdial , You will need to read the tech doc on the tech sight , USE the script from the german sight (the english one wont run). This will allow your pc to dial out on the modem any time there is an ips request. Works very well. If you have more than one machine then you can set up a router with any low end pc and use freesco or smoothwall for the isp connection along with ethernt networking to allow the other users acess to the router. for the script use the one from http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/de/html/hoe_wv_dod_start.html

Install mozilla 0.7 from RPM, it took me less than 2 minutes. It's better too because it has SSL support built in. You might also try Galeon if you use gnome, it is based on mozilla but it is a bit snappier. You can find them both here: ftp://galeon.ufies.org/pub/galeon/suse/ Yo, Dannie -- Dannie M Stanley SpinWeb Net Designs, Inc. http://www.spinweb.net Eric Richards wrote:

You don't have to delete Netscape 4.x in order to install 6.x. They can coexist nicely. If you want to get rid of the old one though: [root]/root# time rm -rf /opt/netscape rm -rf /opt/netscape 0,00s user 0,04s system 23% cpu 0,169 total ^^^^^^^^^^^ Hmm, not even close to 30 minutes. [...]

There are many problems with Netscape 6. 1. A design problem, they wanted more features rather than speed. 2. They were pressured to release the browser as quickly as possible, they relented a little early. 3. Netscape on Windows is just as slow for me (whenb I tested it). Mozilla seems to be fater for me, but no Java working well in it yet. Matt On Thu, 01 Feb 2001 02:47:30 Eric Richards wrote:

Not to suggest that Eric is an M$ troll,..... I have noticed that in recent days several M$ execs have been quoted in various publications spewing the same line... you know the lines, you've seen them on LinuxToday and SlashDot. They are even attending LinuxExpos to deflect media interest. Apparently M$ execs have also been instructed to seek out and have conversations with known Linux users to help anlyze the Linux "phenomena". What is also obvious is that simultaneously, on all places where Linux users congrgate, there are massive quantities of anti-Linux, pro-Microsoft msgs being posted, usually by 'anonymous' posters. The anti-Linux M$ disinformation and FUD attack is in high gear and it looks like the MicroDrones have been recruited/payed? to help spread the smear... They're scared. Jerry, I tell you something that I am amazed with - considering the "intelligence" of the M$ lackey in question here...He is apparently illiterate. I know that on a BBS, grammar is not something that we all strive for, but for Pete's sake, I am sure that he has a fully automated spelling and grammar checker on his email system (prob. outlook). I tell you another thing, since I have found StarOffice, I have grown to loath M$. And if this lackey wants more proof of the junk programming in M$ Windoze (intentional typo), how about this: About a year ago, I installed Homesite 4.1 update on my Win98 system. About a day later I found that I could not cut and paste or transfer any files on my hard drive. I could not use my floppy nor could I open some of the programs that I had on my system. All attributed to the infamous "system registry" and some poor programming (drag and drop). It took me three days and some hate mail to Allaire before they would give me the registry entries to remove. That did not fix the problem either. They ended up giving me the beta of their next upgrade that finally "mysteriously" fixed the problem. How's that for a reliable OS? You know, that's been a year now and I still get po'd thinking about it. I purchased my current box, a Sony VAIO P166 on Dec 29th 1996. Between that day and March 5th, 1997 I had to reinstall Win95 FIVE times. That caused me to start looking for another OS. On 3/7/97 I installed RH 5.0 and in Sept I switched to SuSE. Since I switched to Linux (SuSE) I have not had a single OS crash. Today, at work, after getting fed up with daily Win98SE crashes I attempted to install Win2000. No go. It doesn't like my hardware: a two year old Dell OptiPlex GX1 450Mbr PC with 128MB of RAM. Our hardware folks are NCEs and self-taught on WinXX support. Linux scares them to death. Primarily, they think they will have to "go back to school" and relearn networking, pgm installation, etc..... One app I wrote, a timekeeping program, they had to install on three different servers because we didn't have enough Novell license counts on one server to put all 300+ workstations on it. I put in SuSE 6.4 as a BBS system cause they couldn't make Wildcat do what they wanted. I could have taken the same CD and made a server which everyone could have connected to, using Samba, for no extra cost. As it is, we waste 10s of thousands of dollars per year on license fees. Now they are planning to roll out Win2K on those 300 workstations. It was only two years ago that we finished a $1.5M hardware-Win95 upgrade from our old Win3.11 systems. Oh well, they seem to think it's only taxpayer monies, not their own. This is how private interprise whips gov agencies: by being cost efficient. -- "God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of people that these liberties are a gift of God? Thomas Jefferson - 1781
I am sorry that it took you so long to load Netscape on Linux. It is not made for the masses, it is made for those that want customizability and power. If you think that windows is so much better you should stick with windows. After being a windows user for years, I am overjoyed at the challenge and power of Linux. I get aggrivated but then again, I get even more aggrivated when I have to reboot my windows machine after only 6 hours of work. That's right, if I have Photoshop, Homesite, two browsers, and my email running for the duration of (1) work-day, I usually have a failure due to lack of RAM (128mb). <FAIRNESS ON> First up to use the words of a fellow poster on this thread 'On my system windows is on borrowed time'. Secondly since it first came out until late 1999 I used WINNT on my desktop and at the sametime it acted as a print and file server for my small office (2 other computers). For most of that time it worked quite well needing to be re-booted about once a week (not good, but a hell of a lot better than re-booting a couple of times a day inder Win9x). I did eventually develop problems when M$ software bloat and 'service packs' started to bite; I upgraded the memory from 64MB to 128MB, removed the 'service packs' and everything was back to normal. Now I wouldn't want to go back to that (I like my command line et al.) but I do not understand how anyone anywhere used win9x for work when NT was available as a viable alternative. OK NT didn't support all the hardware under the sun and getting games to run under NT can best be described as interesting, but hey we are talking about productivity and not entertainment. <FAIRNESS OFF> That said 'Down with the evil empire! All power to the mighty penguin!' Jethro
Yep thats all correct about Netscape.... However a lot of people want speed over the power and there are a few browsers worth looking at, but nearly all are in some form of beta. I am finding that Mozilla 0.7 is faster already, built upon the same code base as Netscape but with a different philosphy. Galeon on Gnome is meant to be fast too. The fastest I have used so far has to be Konquerer, that thing loads like lightening (faster than IE on Windoze on my computer). by the way, Windoze on my system is living on borrowed time...
