[opensuse] Need help (again) with setting up a wireless adapter
Hi guys - I kinda have a suspicion that an update of some kind may have broken things for me, but not certain... First, some background. I have an ASUS laptop running openSuSE 12.3 x64 with an Atheros wireless adapter. Last year I had the wireless adapter working just fine using the old methods of "ifup wlan0" and "ifdown wlan0" to control it. Because I started having to move around in a lot of different environments, I got tired of managing all the different configurations for each environment, so I decided to give the KDE Networkmanager a try and it works fine for the most part, and STILL does! I now have a need to get openVPN up and running and I have ran into some snags getting it working. I have been asking on the openVPN support forums for help, and I got told, rather bluntly, that they do not support using openVPN with the KDE Networkmanager as they consider it too buggy. So I decided to go back to using the ifup/ifdown methods of controlling my wireless interface and I have discovered that this has stopped working also! Keep in mind that I have done nothing to the ifcfg-wlan0 files I had been using successfully in the past! So I am quite surprised that I am now encountering a difficulty with them... I noted that I am using the ath9k module and looking at recent changes in the change log for kernel updates I also noted some recent changes made surrounding this module. Hence my suspicions.... That said, I will also point out that executing - iwlist wlan0 scan does show me information on various access points, so that means the Atheros adapter is working, to some extent. But after doing an ifup wlan0, iwconfig shows me that I did not establish a connection or get assigned an IP address from my DHCP server. I took the DHCP server out of the equation by trying to assign my laptop a static IP, but no joy getting that to work either, it simply acts like there is no network whatsoever... Anyone got any ideas on how and what I should do to get good ol trusty ifup/ifdown working again? Thanks in advance for helping me... I will be happy to send a copy of my ifcfg files and log files if that will help, but I don't want to overwhelm readers with too much info just yet, until I am asked for it. I've been using the KDE networkmanager plasmoid to connect to two openVPN networks without important problems for years. What are your problems, KDE, openSUSE versions?

Did you disable networkmanager? -- Regards, Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

OpenSuSE version 12.3 x64, KDE Version 4.10.5 "release 1" The problem I am encountering is that while it appears the the openVPN client is making a connection to my openVPN server, when using the KDE Networkmanager to establish the VPN connection, I am not able to send or receive any communication across the link. I can't even ping the server (which is also my gateway computer on the network which is what I am trying to connect to.) I am using a TUN0 connector. Executing a route command on both the server and the client does show that the VPN connection is established, when using the KDE Networkmanager to establish the VPN connection. So this caused me to seek help on the openVPN forum, where I was told they do not support the KDE NEtworkmanager and that I should not be using it.

Yes. otherwise this test would have been meaningless in regards to using ifup/ifdown. I disabled it through YaST -> Network Settings -> Global Options. Have you disabled or properly configured your firewall? Is the default route properly configured? Please post the relevant entries in /var/log/Networkmanager. Make certain that you redact any sensitive information first. -- Regards, Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
