I'll resend this as it looks like all mail has been lost :-( it may help others ? Pete -------------------------------------------------- Hooray - I have managed to get it working although I'm not sure that I am using the system to its best :-( Step 1) Recompiled the kernel without support for ATI Mach 64 (Console Driver) - it wasn't in 6.1 IIRC. Step 2) Ran ./quake2 +set vid_ref softx in 'X' - didn't work still.. Step 3) Ran ./quake2 +set vid_ref soft in a console - worked fine (no sound) Step 4) Ran ./quake2 +set vid_ref softx in 'X' - worked fine (no sound - couldn't switch /dev/dsp to stereo) Step 5) Ran above but added +set sndchannel 1 (to make it mono - its only a SB 64 card) - but still couldn't default to 16 bits so.. Step 6) Ran above but added +set sndbits 8 and voila ! A fully functioning Quake2 albeit in mono but I'm not worried about that I don't know why the above was necessary - but thanks to all for your suggestions. Pete On Sun, 18 Jun 2000, you wrote:

I have tried running it in a console and it does bring up the game but the picture is unviewable..
Can I clarify - if I have a MACH64 card should I now be using the glx mode or is softx still the correct option - I seem to remember someone saying that with 6.4 there has been a change to some of the Xservers ?

I have also tried to set sndmono 1 to see if that helped.. although I suspected I am looking at an 'X' problem than a sound problem - I may be wrong !

I hope that this is not a silly question...
When I was running 6.1, I installed Quake2 quite happily with my ATI Expert 98 graphics card, it has a MACH64 chipset..
now that I have upgraded to 6.4 (and its definately worth it despite a couple of problems) I have the following problem..
cut and paste

end
and back to the command line..
can anybody help ?
Many thanks
Pete

Had to get new sound modules from OSS. Make sure you also have +s (4755) I believe on the binary. More than likely it is a sound thangy :) Good luck. Maybe we could play sometime... --
