Problems with printer setups - YAST
I have encountered some big problems with printer setups, particularly through YAST. Machine 1: Dell i386. For the first time in many SuSE releases, my HP4L printer was not fully setup during the initial installation from DVD. It was listed in YAST, but a test page would not print (hang forever). I noticed that /var/log/messages was giving error messages about a missing hpiod (xxx.c) file. Then I noticed from chkconfig that hpiod was not turned on. I turned it on, rebooted, did not attempt to do a test print from YAST (I saw some comment somewhere about that), and printing worked. There is no good reason why the setup and test should not be as good as in previous releases. A new Linux (SuSE) user would not know what to do and would not be happy. Machine 2: A dual Opteron. This problem is far more serious, and is not solved at the moment. My HP Laserjet 6MP was detected and I could set it up, even with a test print, during installation. But later, I wanted to set up some network queues through YAST. The YAST Printer setup page shows the 6MP, and there is an option to 'Add' queues. I use it, and select the PPD file for the printer. But the list of connection options does NOT include anything for network or remote printing! I decided to delete the 6MP configuration, also shut off the printer, and rebooted. This time I could select the PPD file I wanted and the list of connections included the 'Direct Connection' option I needed. The test print worked. The I wanted to setup a second queue to the same printer, with different options. Unlike previous YAST versions, there seems to be no way to copy the first queue to another one for editing. The 'Add' button brings up a rather bare list. I can select the PPD file, but the connection option askes ONLY for a URI. Nothing I try will work. There is no option for 'Direct Connection...' So, in summary, if a local printer is setup, YAST can not setup additional queues for remote printing. If there is no local queue, only one remote queue can be setup. Please respond to the list, as I will unsubscribe soon. (I get too much spam as it is.) Thank you for your help.

As you don't tell us how the printer is connected, I can only guess: If it is a parallel port printer, see the "Release Notes" which are shown during installation: /usr/share/doc/release-notes/RELEASE-NOTES.en.html "Using Parallel-Port Printers" The actual reason is that for parallel port printer autodetection the parallel port kernel modules must be re-loaded to make sure that a new switched-on parallel port printer will be detected. When parallel port is used in ECP/DMA mode there happens some kind of DMA deadlock after the parallel port kernel modules have been re-loaded (i.e. it is actually a kernel module bug). I.e. don't use ECP/DMA mode in the BIOS for the parallel port. Then all will work well.

See https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=120951 I.e. answer "No" to add a "really" new queue. Kind Regards Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstrasse 5 Mail: jsmeix@suse.de 90409 Nuernberg, Germany WWW: http://www.suse.de/
