[opensuse] SuSE cannot restart internet services after network blackout
Today the network went down for the whole building. After about 1/2 hour people were able to use the internet again. So was I on my wireless laptop but I am still isolated on my wire (Ethernet) desktop. Both systems are running Linux/SuSE ..... Someone here suggested that Linux looses sone network infor which is written in a /etc system file whenever the network service is interrupted abruptly. Is that true ? I tried to reboot but nothing changed. Why the wireless system has not been affected ? How can I retrieve the lost piece of data ? Thank you so much, Maura -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If one machine is working that's a good start point in order to begin investigations :-) Check the wireless network configuration, especially the IP and DNS ones and then replicate it logically, on the wired machine. Other checks must be oriented from the very basic standpoints as: Physical connection from pc to router, switch, outlets... What is the connection device from wired pc toward the outside connection? The wired PC is connected through an Ethernet cable to the University server. Thank you, Maura

It could be that University server is offering DHCP service to the wired PC and that something has changed on the configuration(?) But before to enter into this section, verify all from the very basic: 1 ping from wired.pc to U.server 2 ping from U.server to wired.pc 3 ping from U.server to a internet address (ping google.com) 4 cat /etc/resolv.conf on U.server 5 ping from wired.pc to one of the nameserver of U.server resolv.conf If (as I am thinking) you are working, or you are member/student of a University, ask to an IT "old man" which can guide you better than whomsoever to discover and solve the problem. No change. I was told Linux (maybe most distributions) looses some network configuration data that is in a system file of the /etc directory. But no one knows the file name and what is lost on a sudden blackout Maura

I don't think so. /etc holds static configuration dta, nothing can be lost there. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. There is something not going quite right here in regards to 11.1 (don't know about 11.2). My wife and I are each connected directly to the modem/router. She is running KDE4.2 while I am running KDE4.3.1. We are both running knemo to monitor our traffic. When we lose connection to the internet and then the line comes back up again she is unable to connect to another URL, not even our own ISP (error message: "Server not found") when she tries to refresh the page although she is already on our ISP's site. The KDE network monitor shows that there is no network connection (to the modem/router) (eth0 state: disconnected) and knemo shows that she has no IP address (she's usually 192.168.1.xx; the only info showing is the NIC address). She has to either reboot her computer or logout and login in before she is able to access any URL. On the other hand, I don't have this problem. THAT'S what I was lookng for :-) . Thanks, Patrick. However, the question remains as to why 11.1 loses the connection and then cannot reconnect -- but could do so until quite recently. I have connected Linux on many networks and never had such an issue. However, one thing you could try is to use Wireshark to see what's happening on the network. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I just caught and read this thread. Other people have given good advice, but I'd like to add that sometimes flaky hardware will... well, flake out. The NIC may not be properly sending a wakeup or is failing when the system tries to restart services the first time (if, say, the card is slow to establish protocol). Maybe a small script that tests for a network connection and restarts services if found could set to run occasionally by cron. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
