Installing SuSE 9.2 onto Adaptec HostRaid
Hi guys, I'm trying to install 9.2 onto a hardware raid setup. The RAID controller is an Adaptec 39320A and I've got two 74GB SCSI disks in a RAID 1 setup. The problem is - SuSE doesn't even see the hard drives! I checked the modules loaded by the Kernel and it had what seemed to be the appropriate modules loaded. Whether they are properly configured or not is another questions. I've googled for an answer on this and haven't really found one - any gurus out there know how to do this? Regards, Angus Beath

Hi Angus, I'm far from a "guru" but I've been seeing a large increase in traffic here regarding Adaptec / SCSI / RAID and 9.2 installation issues. Google this to get an idea of what's going on: site:lists.suse.com suse-linux-e adaptec scsi >=2005 regards, - - Carl - -- ____________________________________________________________________ C. E. Angus, I added ">=2005" because tons of stuff was coming up from 2003/2004 without it. This probably knocked out any relevant hits from the last part of 2004, so the search string needs refinement. Also, I don't want to leave you with the impression that this is a SuSE problem. My impression, after much googling and reading, is there have been some related issues being ironed out in kernel recently. regards, - - Carl - -- ____________________________________________________________________ C. Hey gang, OK, having spent a couple of hours on this, I've found a workaround. The Adaptec 39320A has HostRAID capabilities. I turned this off and then installed SuSE onto a software RAID/LVM with the two SCSI disks I have. It's unfortunate that I cannot get hardware raid to work, and I don't have the time to pursue this further. I should note, that I attempted installs of Libranet (based on Debian) and also Fedora Core 3 and had the same result. Linux is able to see the raid adapter, but not the hostraid part of it and therefore, no hardware raid. Hopefully this will be fixed up soon. I've submitted appropriate bug reports. It's unfortunate that I cannot get hardware raid to work,
Complain to Adaptec who don't want to offer an open source driver or at least the specs to enable the community to come up with a driver. Philipp

I don't know if this will help with SuSE 9.2. I was trying to load a Fedora Core 3 box at work that would not load the aacraid module for a 2120S. I flashed the card to the latest firmware version (7349) and it installed with no problems. The source code version of the aacraid driver is on the Adaptec support/download page. I am going to try this out today and see if I can get some version of the Storage Manager software working. This combination of software and hardware was at the request of my customer. I would have used software RAID and been done by now. ;-) Louis

Certainly take Philipp's point here, but since Adaptec won't cough up, *is* there a good U320 hardware raid card that works flawlessy with SuSE 9.2? I tried the hardware database but (as not infrequently with the hcd) didn't seem to find devices mentioned that I was able to actually source in the shops. Perhaps I am not searching it right ... In the last year and a half I have twice tried to get Adaptec's less-expesive zero slot/channel raid cards (e.g. 2015S) to work in my Tyan Opteron motherboards. First with SuSE SLES8, then with SLES 9. My server integrator worked with Adaptec and Tyan both times for a total of six weeks - but no joy. In both cases we have gone with Intel SRCU42L RAID cards and been quite happy. They are about twice as much as the zero-channel RAID cards ($450 US versus about $215 US) BUT ... they just work. I've had to hack together the RAID monitoring utility (icp_utils) but they seem to work reasonably. But the Intel card has more than paid for itself - even if I just value my time at $5 per hour :) Adaptec's HostRaid solution is an attempt to compete against inexpensive (no-processor) ATA RAID solutions without cannibalizing their full function RAID controllers. And they do not seem to want to support Linux with their less expensive adapters - either HostRaid or zero-channel RAID. HTH - Richard BTW: Yes, its a little ironic I'm using an Intel RAID adapter in AMD processor powered servers. Fergus Wilde wrote:

I had some nasty experiences with an Adaptec 2120 controller that crashed very reliable under Suse 9.1 (aacraid module) as soon as big files were copied on/off the raid array. The only solution at that time was to use kernel 2.4 with Suse 9.0. That combination is still working stable as a samba server. Next week I'll try Suse 9.2 with LSI Raid Controller. The vendor claims it will work and the driver seems to be included in Suse 9.2. Let's give it a week to run and I'll write about my experience. (^-^) Sandy

Thanks Richard, that's very helpful! Cheers, Fergus.

Intel only bought knowledge. These were formerly ICP Controllers. Philipp

In a similar situation at university[1] we had some stickers made up which may be appropriate for you, too. In the style of the official Intel stickers, they said: "Intel Inside. But not in charge."
