[opensuse] Fwd: Opensuse 11.1 and ATI HD4870 + Catalyst 8.12 not working
Hi, I just installed Opensuse 11.1 (32-bit). My PC is equipped with an ATI HD4870 card (512MB). I downloaded the ATI driver from the AMD web site and ran the installer. I chose the option to create an RPM for Suse 11.1 and installed it with zypper. Then I ran aticonfig --initial and rebooted. when xorg starts the screen is mostly black and garbled (pic available if necessary). The relevant part of the Xorg.0.log file are (full file available if necessary): (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libvbe.so (II) Module vbe: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 1.5.2, module version = 1.1.0 ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 4.1 (II) fglrx(0): VESA BIOS detected (II) fglrx(0): VESA VBE Version 3.0 (II) fglrx(0): VESA VBE Total Mem: 16384 kB (II) fglrx(0): VESA VBE OEM: ATI ATOMBIOS (II) fglrx(0): VESA VBE OEM Software Rev: 11.3 (II) fglrx(0): VESA VBE OEM Vendor: (C) 1988-2005, ATI Technologies Inc. The problems seems to come from the fact that xorg is trying to open a device named /dev/dri/cardX but there is no /dev/dri folder on my system. Did anybody manage to get this configuration to work already? Thanks, ~/jc -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

On the forum, there's been 1 success report, it involved not running "aticonfig --initial"; I noted the report, but cannot confirm, as my battle with 3D drivers has not begun yet, due to more pressing issues. Perhaps try searching there and see if you could find it. At that point, I wasn't bookmarking "golden" posts, so I can't give you a link, sorry. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I'm not sure if this will help anyone out. I had run into issue with the ATI driver installation which was crashing on start up. With the history of ATI/AMD drivers this wasn't a surprise to me. With a little assist from a friend, we had found that in my install the build had placed the wrong location for a x64 system. The temporary fix was done in the command window by issuing the following under root.... Dropped to runlevel 3 init 3 Then the following.......... ln -s /usr/lib64/dri dri Afterwards we killed the the on going fglrx processes identified by ps -ax The went back to run level 5 init 5 Since for some strange reason the Catalyst didn't install in my KDE4 menu so we were able to test it by issuing the command of amdcccle Whether this helps out anyone else I don't know. I'm running the Lenovo W500 with the ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 Happy Holidays -- ***************** Thank You, Michael A. This is a 32-bit install. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I got it resolved. The trick is that even though the graphical interface of the ATI drive installer said that the driver was installed it was not. Looking at /usr/share/ati.fglrx-install.log revealed compilation errors. I had to install kernel-sources, kernel-headers, gcc and make before it compiled and installed without error. So I give one big negative point for wasting 2 days of my time by not displaying error messages in the graphical interface! Merry Christmas everybody. ~/jc -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
