This is something I haven't run into before, but sounds pretty serious. I was browing with Konqi when all of a sudden, all of KDE (save the wallpaper part of KDesktop) just died. I was left with Gaim, xconsole, and my wallpaper, so naturally, I read what xconsole had to say about the matter. This is what it said (several times): "vs-13048:reiserfs-iget: bad-inode. Start of (284393 287735) not found" Any idea what this means, or what I should do (is their a chkdsk-like tool for Linux/reiserfs I should run)? Is it a reoccurring error or just happened once? If it happens over and over again, it's probably a bug and you should report it to the reiserfs mailing list (I believe it's reiserfs@namesys.com ). Can you mount the partition again flawlessly? If so, it was probably just hit a "bump", but you should report it to reiserfs@namesys.com anyway... Reiserfs is a journaling filesystem, so there is no (or is there a need to have) equivalent of Scandisk in Windows9x or e2fsck for ext2 filesystems. If however, you would feel more secure doing so, download the reiserfs-tools package from http://www.namesys.com . It includes /reiserfsck/ which goes through your partition and checks everything including data, empty space, and the journal. Keep in mind, however, that the tool is designed to try to "fix" partition that have irreconcilable errors from crashes, bugs, and whatnot. After a my system started to freeze today (it was so busy with disk activity it was impossible to do anything), I went to the message log, and apparently a bad inode error is sent out at least 3-6 times an hour. You didn;'t say, but are you by any chance using a 2.4.[012] kernel, and using NFS ? If so you've been hit by a bug in the reiser/knfsd combo. Upgrade to (at least) a 2.4.4 kernel (or get suse 7.2). (basically the moment an inode gets out of the nfs cache it gets marked bad (bad inode, bad bad inode, no doughnut). Easy to reproduce. Mount disk over NFS to another machine. on other machine do find /mnt/remote/dir -print. Bingo. Unfortunately, Reiser doesn't handle bad sectors well at all. I had similar trouble on my laptop, where the hard disk light wouldn't go out and I couldn''t do anything. The fix is not that appealing, either. Here's what I did: - - Ordered a new hard drive (got my manager to agree to getting one twice the size) - - Removed old hard drive - - Used a drill and a hammer to "cleanse the old one of bad spirits" The problem never came back. Now my machine at home gets weird from time to time. I'd get an IO error on certain files, and I can't overwrite them. When this happens I perform the following workaround: - - Move the directory (that's where the problem is) to a new directory off the root called 'broken' - - Recreate the original directory with the appropriate perms and ownerships - - Move all of the "good" files back - - Recreate the bad one In this situation, I've tried reiserfsck before, and it did a lot of trashing of my files. Many of them were "rounded up" to the end of the nearest inode. I also had something weird happen the other day. A Python script that ran every minute started failing. It turns out that an 'else' magically turned into an 'elde'. This falls in line with the fact that some libraries had to be reinstalled because programs were not running properly. Lately, I've been seeing the same error as you on it as well. I think I'm going to end up buying a new hard drive.
