[opensuse] Ugly, blue login manager in openSUSE 12.2
I have just updated to openSUSE 12.2, and the login manager seems to have reverted to an extremely ugly theme with blue, vertical stripes, which I guess is not the official 12.2 theme for the login manager. Any idea why, and how to fix this? I do have kdm-branding-openSUSE-12.2-11.6.15.noarch installed. -- Karl Ove Hufthammer http://huftis.org/ Jabber: karl@huftis.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager
DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="openSUSE"
The old value was "SUSE", but changing it to "openSUSE" didn’t seem to have any effect.

But changing the theme using the KDE System Settings did, so I now have a nice, green KDE theme (though user list all the way to the left of the screen looks a bit strange). -- Karl Ove Hufthammer E-mail: karl@huftis.org Jabber: huftis@jabber.no -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi I have the same ugly kdm. What theme did you use and how did you make it stick? Whenever I choose a theme, it does not show. THanks, L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Patrick. No go. Still the same mid 90's login. I set it to: "openSUSE w/o "s as you suggested http://dl.dropbox.com/u/45150875/kdm.png Maybe that's not the right setting? Hi Everyone Sorry, but I tried openSUSE (no quotes, single quotes,space in between open and suse, all capitals all lower case, the lot) but still I have ugly 1990's blue curtains with an awful login windows. I tried to change the theme in KDE system settings but it doesn't accept it. I always get the horrid blue. . . Looks like you're stuck with the horus theme. Presumably you're using the default (kdm4) window manager. Try editing /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager: # Comment out existing line if it's there #DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="horus" (or whatever it is) # Add another line thus DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="SUSE" # so you won't have to remember what it was originally # and can easily change it back. While you're in the file, check to see that the display manager is set: DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm4" because, for some odd reason, kdm (aka kdm3) is now broken. Then do: service xdm restart and if you don't get X screen do: service xdm start because sometimes restart doesn't. Et voila. Hopefully. YMMV, etc. Using YaST2 sysconfig editor doesn't really seem to be working for me. (Can't remember if it ever worked.) So I change the file directly. jd -- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi No difference. Am I missing the new packages for kdm perhaps? L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That is unusual. I recall having a similar if not same problem with a much earlier version of OpenSuSE several years ago. But i don't remember exactly what I had to do. IIRC some config files or scripts were broken and I wound up editing config files to get things working. There was very little help on kdm configuration at the time and I managed to get things working just by luck. It has probably not changed since then. Is there any clue in the logfiles xdm.log and messages? Config errors are more likely to appear in messages. Do you have themes listed in /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes ? I have: $ls -F circles/ horos/ oxygen/ oxygen-air/ SUSE/ Have you tried editing the [X-*-Greeter] section in /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc? There is more config stuff in /etc/X11/xdm but that shouldn't have any real effect unless someone broke it in the release. The best way to find that out is by comparing to say, 12.1's files. Ultimately, if you get no results, doing the quick-and-dirty trick of renaming the existing theme directory in /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes to $THEME-orig and symlinking $THEME to SUSE typically works. For example, renaming horos to horos-orig and then symlinking horos to SUSE. That should get you the SUSE theme and it becomes non-configurable by users. jd -- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
