No not trying to change root files as user.
Trying to change root files as superuser root.
System doesn't want a superuser is my impression... yast wants to be
superuser.
who am I I have been wondering for about 5 days as i tinker with this
thing... and get absolutely nothing done... imagine I got a worm in
there... and yast complied... what a disaster...

No, not if there's no config entry there, they should stay in /etc. But then i really don't get why the system does not notice you changed them. Could you give an example of such a change?
