Hello, I installed the OOo 1.1 beta2 on my machine to mainly look at it to see what improvements have been implimented. It installed fine but it cannot find my java environment. I used the program jvmsetup and told it where it was but it returns that no jave environment was found. I know that this is a OOo question but I have noticed some users on this list that were using it and might have gotten it to work. I'm using the java that came with 8.2. Any suggestions on how I can get java recognized? Thanks, -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

My guess would be the gcc vresion it was compiled with. Try installing a version compiled with gcc 2.9.5. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. OK I will give that a shot. Can another version of jave live beside the existing one or am I going to have to change some things? -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

Both the Blackdown and Sun Java packages are on the installation media and they will co-exist without problems. SuSEconfig will set up a link to one (most likely Blackdown) as default, but the other one can be used by packages which need it (like some releases of Mozilla.) HTH Dylan

If OO reports that no java environment was found, then just point the OO installer to the location where your java is installed. Since you are using SuSE 8.2, your jre is somewhere around usr/lib/Blackdown/... or usr/lib/jre2/... or usr/lib/java2. The OO installer will let you browse around until you find a jre that the installer will accept. I have had to do this for both the OO and SO beta's. Much easier IMO to help the installer find an existing JRE than to install an additional JRE. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? That's just it, It will not find the environment! I have told the jvmsetup program the directory where it is installed and still it keeps saying No runtime found. I will try again though. Thanks all for the suggestions! -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

My installation finds Blackdown Java when pointed to /usr/lib/BlackdownJava2-1.4.1/jre Dylan

I found OOo 1.1 beta 2 wouldn't use or find the Blackdown Java on my 8.2 system. But 1.1RC recognised it after browsing to /usr/lib/java2/jre/bin Maybe a bug in 1.1beta2. Jason

I'm beginning to think so. Jason, what is your opinion of RC release of OOo? Is it worth the download? -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

Well, I'm not Jason, but it's a fine package - although it doesn't look much (if any) diffeect from 1.0, it shows some icky Word files just fine and doesn't scramble them for Word like I found 1.0 could. Dylan

Sorry about that :( I should not have pin pointed it to one person's opinion. The reason why I did here is because Jason was using it as he stated in his mail. I also have a modem and it will take a while to download it so this is the reason that I ask. I appreciate the feedback Dylan and Jason! -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

A big improvement IMHO. It looks a lot nicer - uses the system libfreetype, and Bitstream Vera fonts for the UI. Loads a lot faster, (less than 5 secs from cold on my Athlon 1700XP+) and doesn't suffer from the performance problems some of us were having in using OOo when the system was under even moderate load (e.g. compiling or Seti@Home). I've had an issue with a particular file I had created with loads of tables in it, but everything else seems to be working fine (bug reported, so hopefully will be fixed, soon). And the UK dictionary is included by default, which is important to some of us. ;-) HTH, Jason

The thing is that the Blackdown Java runtime is compiled with gcc3.x but the Sun offering is compiled with gcc2.95(?) Hence - some packages or apps will only work with one or the other, depending on which compiler edition they are compiled with, and how they use the Java system. So there are situations where it is necessary to have both installed. So far as OOo is concerned though, it doesn't require Java to work as an office package, only to use Java-based web content.
