Just an FYI on YOU for SuSE 8.1 and onward... Two http:// choices for installation sources for YOU downloads have been added and by my testing have caused a dramatic speed improvement from 20-30 minutes to get the list of patches, updates, security fixes to 2-3 minutes if that long. Very quick for me. YMMV. Stan

Uh, there automatically included when YOU starts up and does a it queary for available servers. I just tried by open YaST and looking at the addresses in the pull down menu - the new ones are there, And it was very much faster. Cheers, Curtis.

In a moment of unusual clarity I actually had the good sense to try that before sending my original mail, but the only site listed is the one (I believe I manually entered some time ago) at ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ but no other listings. Unfortunately I don't remember now where I made this entry, but perhaps my changes are keeping the new sites from being listed. This site was generally the fastest response for me, much faster than ftp.gwdg.de. I fired up yast before starting this mail also, searched around my filesystem looking for yast configuration files, then finished this mail and the (second) requester is still sitting there "Initializing for FTP/HTTP update. One moment please..." I'm a slow typist on a fairly fast machine w/ a cable internet connection :-( See ya -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!

I think providing the urls is shows at least a bit of compassion ;-) Now if I could only remember/find the file I changed (that shows the available installation sources) in the first place. Thanks -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!

No problem. I know the answer to your config change is in the list archives, somewhere.. AND its in the Unofficial SuSE FAQ of all places! (I amaze myself sometimes :-o ). /etc/suseservers Stan

/etc/sysconfig/onlineupdate: YAST2_LOADFTPSERVER="no" The list of servers gets copied to "/etc/suseservers". -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Thanks Carlos and Stan, I did find the file (and had actually backed up the original as well). Yes YOU does move a bit quicker now. see ya -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!

As I mentioned the other day, the reason YOU is so slow getting the list of patches is because it does an ftp login for every single file that it downloads (the list of patches has about 130 files of 2..3 kbytes each). If the server you connect to is slow acepting a new login, the process can be real slow. Maybe, this is a guess, updating from an "http" server instead of an "ftp" server is faster, because it has no login process. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
