We use OpenOffice presentations which sometimes invoke external resources. Under OpenSuSE 10.3/KDE 3 the multimedia files would simply get open in whatever application is specified in the Konqueror as default, and executables such as scripts would simply be executed. Here's a little addendum to the above: the distinction appears to be between KDE3 and KDE4: whereas under the former the links from the ODP file open as expected by their assigned applications under KDE4 they get channeled to Konqueror and stuck there.

Beyond this, I am still clueless as to the reason for this mess, hence any help would be much appreciated.

Check "File Associations" KDE3: Personal Settings > KDE Components I have mess there that is fixed as I find a problem. For instance Cervisia is listed for any media. It's not under KDE3, it's under KDE4 that I have the problem.
