7.3 cdrecorder and cd-sound question
hello, I managed to install 7.3 as newbie on my harddisk together with NT4 (even with lilo in the MBR, which "shouldn't be possible" if I have to believe the suse documentation). But I'm still running into a perhaps? minor problem with the CD recorder: 1. there is a single CD recorder/player in the PC but it's now marked as just a cd player, so I cannot burn any cd's. Which settings/files should I check or change? 2. My soundcard is functioning, i.e. I'm able to hear wav files playing, but I do not hear any music CD's. Again, where is this information stored and which files should I change? Any help is welcome.Taco Walstra (walstra at science.uva.nl)
If you have an IDE CD-RW, a clean install of 7.3 should have set
it up automatically using the ide-scsi emulation module. The CD
burning software (mkisofs and cdrecord) only works on SCSI
devices, hence the emulation.
try ls -al /dev/cdrom on the command line. You should see
something like this:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Nov 19 13:24
/dev/cdrom -> /dev/sr0
If it is linked to a /dev/hdx like name, then it was set up as
an IDE device instead of SCSI. If your CD-RW is truly a SCSI
device, it should also be OK.
Please read the CD Burning HOW-TO for all the gory details. It
includes some excellent shell scripts to automate burning data
and audio CDs.

You should search the list archives for the thread entitled "playing audio CD's which will likely answer part 2 of your questions. -- Marianne Taylor On Monday 03 December 2001 04:01, Taco Walstra wrote:
