Group; Has anyone among this group gotten a DVD and xine to work? I have SuSE 8.2 soon to be 9.0 I am trying to get it to work and I am drawing a blank (due to this so called great economy in USA). I have down loaded and compiled xine, xine-libs and gxine. I have also grabbed all of the dependencies - even em3800 and DVB. What am I missing? I have mount the filesystem and just get a flash of one image.vob. It may even be due to a old DVD format (Taffin DVD). Well, for license/legal reasons, the zine shipped with 8.2 is crippled. Best just to uninstall it. Then go here http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=124 and download everything on that page except the devel packages (which you can get if you wish, they don't hurt anything and are small) Put them all in a single directory and install then with rpm. You need the latest versions of these files (and the numbers hera are not necessarily the latest, just what I happen to have in my machine). The first couple are the tricky ones to find. libdvdcss2-1.2.6-0.pm.0.i686.rpm libdvdcss2-devel-1.2.6-0.pm.0.i686.rpm libdvdread-0.9.4-2.pm.0.i686.rpm libdvdread-devel-0.9.4-2.pm.0.i686.rpm libogg-1.0cvs20030518-0.pm.0.i686.rpm libogg-devel-1.0cvs20030518-0.pm.0.i686.rpm libtheora-0.0cvs20030518-0.pm.0.i586.rpm libtheora-devel-0.0cvs20030518-0.pm.0.i586.rpm libxine1-1_beta12-0.pm.1.i686.rpm libxine1-alsa09-1_beta12-0.pm.1.i686.rpm libxine1-arts-1_beta12-0.pm.1.i686.rpm libxine1-devel-1_beta12-0.pm.1.i686.rpm libxine1-dvd-1_beta12-0.pm.1.i686.rpm libxine1-flac-1_beta12-0.pm.1.i686.rpm libxine1-oggtheora-1_beta12-0.pm.1.i686.rpm libxine1-oggvorbis-1_beta12-0.pm.1.i686.rpm libxine1-sdl-1_beta12-0.pm.1.i686.rpm libxine1-w32dll-1_beta12-0.pm.1.i686.rpm xine-skin-CelomaGold-4.0-0.pm.0.noarch.rpm xine-skin-Keramic-4.0-0.pm.0.noarch.rpm xine-ui-0.9.21-0.pm.0.i686.rpm Lastly, check in Yast for the setting that forces your dvd drive into dma mode, or output will be jerky. Hardware setting is where its located. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

The following, slightly simpler, method worked OK for me:
Install termcap from the CDs - xine-ui needs it.
Get the following rpms from the cambuca site at
http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/:
curl-7.10.3-1.i386.rpm (curl-7.10.2 is already installed on a SuSE
default install, and this is just an update of that)
libxine1-1_cvs-030914.k6.rpm
xine-ui-0.9.22cvs-030922
libdvdcss-1.2.8-1.network.i386.rpm
and install them in that order:
(su) rpm -Uvh

.rpm Run SuSEconfig for good measure.
Use YaST2 to switch DMA on for the DVD drive.

Hello Thank you for your wishes but Santa Claus did not come. I launch Xine without problem. Gui is activated (xine-ui), I click on DVD, I manage to have the menu, can choose language even chapter or title then the movies starts and I can not do anything more: no pause, no stop, no forward or backward, just stay and look till the end. The system is very unstable. What could be missing? All the above rpm's were installed. It is not the first time I have this unstability with Xine (or the Gui). -- Alain Barthélemy cassandre@bartydeux.be http://www.bartydeux.be Linux User #315631

I just tried xine-libs (xine-lib-1.0.rc1) and xine-ui (xine-ui-0.9.22-1), and they work well. Of course, you need libdvdcss to see comercial DVDs (I tried libdvdcss-1.2.2-1) -- nothing more not included on the distro is needed. Run xine-check. Check also what the config phase of xine-libs detected or didn't detect.
What am I missing? I have mount the filesystem and just get a flash of one image.vob. It may even be due to a old DVD format (Taffin DVD).
Try another dvd, and see if that one works. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Make sure you have lib DeCSS, and LibDVDRead, if you cant find them they are currently located on my website under the Applications section.

Do not mount the filesystem. You may want to try Ogle as well.

This time I tried without LibDVDRead, and it works - at least, with sine-lib version 1. I was surprised, it was the easiest compile ever. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
Sorry to come back to this. Installed Suse 9.0. To make xine play DVD, is it sufficient to install libdvdcss? Or must I remove the Suse xine (xine-lib, xine-ui - something else?) and then download a consistent set of rpms (including libdvdcss) from where? I have been looking around on the web to find a complete set but without success (and certainly not for Suse 9.0). I do not want to start compiling things if this can be avoided. Thanks in advance for clear instructions. I'm using suse 8.2, but I gues it would work - at least, you can try. But from what I saw on the suse 8.2 spec file and sources, there are many codecs that are dissabled because they are in fact patented or with unknown legal status. So, it would be more correct to say that it would work unless you need a codec that is not available.
success (and certainly not for Suse 9.0). I do not want to start compiling things if this can be avoided.
It's early, I guess. But you can try to recompile suse's version enabling the codecs. I failed, though, it was far easier to compile from sources. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
