I believe this topic was just discussed a few days ago. Subject: "Where are the programs". The connection with the CD or DVD player must have been lost. In Yast2, go to Software > Change source of installation, delete the installed media and try to add them again. You'll probably run into an error message like this: The source medium cannot be mounted. /dev/hdb: file or directory not found If that is the case, make sure that /dev/cdrom exists, and is a link to the installation medium, e.g. /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd. Then you should be able to add the CD or DVD player in "Change source of installation". If you're interested in an explanation, it can be found in the installed Support Database, keyword 'Installation source', subject 'Package Installation from the CD with YaST2 Not Possible'. SH

Yes that's right. But ............ Your advise is not the solution to the problem. I'm glad that somebody else has the same problem. I have upgraded to 8.2 and now all what I have in Yast are the installed programs. NO list of uninstalled. When I needed to install guile-gtk..... I had to physicly search all the cd's to find the RPM. I put the question to SuSe but no reply received as yet. -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I it will be a linux only machine. Are there any mid-range laptops that work particularly well (or poorly) with SUSE? Thanks to all. I have had no problems with sony vaio's I can even get drivers in linux that they don't release for windows updates for my particular model (e.g. jog dial stuff for win2k is not available for "legal reasons", but I have it for linux :) Plus, since sony is retail, I found it to be the cheapest (when compared with other companies of similarly spec'd laptops) by severl hundred. You just need to shop around the internet (e.g. cnet.com or something) and compare prices for sony's ...something you can't do with a dell. Or, you could check linux journal, or linux magazine ads for companies that sell name brand laptops with linux pre-installed. -jeric -=JericAtSbcglobalDotNetwork=- 3 days 15 hrs 52 min, since last reboot. Did you know? Firewalls, NATs, VPN, WindowsXP, and many other security/networking tools are technically ILLEGAL in the states of DE, IL, MD, MI, WY, PA, MA and VA. Stop the insanity, before its too late! (http://www.freedom-to-tinker.com/superdmca.html for links to the laws)

Hi there,
An IBM X30 Thinkpad will work very well with linux. If I remember
correctly, everything works out of the box with MDK9.1 or SLPro 8.2.

Yeah, it does right out of the box but ... acpi sucks
and most importantly every once in a while X just
freezes so you have to power it off/on to get out of
it ... not very encouraging.
Anyway I've checked HP laptops recently and found out
ze4000 is only for $699 + tax ... not bad at all in my
opinion but dunno how Linux is running on it.

ACPI sucks on about everything under the sun right now, and there is very little anyone can do about it. And are you sure you have not confused the X30 with the X31? I have the X31 and there have been some problems with that, most of which I have found workarounds for (http://www.trudheim.com/x31/). A colleague of mine has a X30 and everything works out of the box, apart from ACPI.

From what I have been told, HP and Compaq laptops should work quite well
with Linux.

With SuSE's implimentation of acpi most of the sony Vaios grx grv grz series work absolutely perfectly out of the box. Nothing hangs, it just works, sony memory stick and all. Sony has become price competitive in recient years. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I have Compaq laptop (evo 150n) I works ok straight out of box (apart from 8.0 pro.. trident's display adapter / drivers to that sometimes caused the mouse pointer to get bit off focus.. Other grey areas I have experienced are ACPI and InfraRed, can't get it working with my Nokia phone.. even with latest Gnokii build fail to connect the phone, but I assume it's the BIOS setting that aren't flexible enough... All in all I am still very pleased with my box and Linux on it.. (only linux on it nowadays) P_s

Your good luck notwithstanding, the general recommendation I've seen posted many places it "Run away from Compaq like your hair is on fire". The few I've delt with couldn't even run windows properly. If your's is working, count your blessings, because most folks give up in disgust. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
Well, with the acception of myself..almost all of my co-workers run SuSE on Toshiba and Sony laptops. They work like a charm or I would hear about it. :) I have an older Thinkpad 390X which isn't wonderful but it's good for Data Centre work. It runs SuSE 8.2 w/ Blackbox quite nicely on it's little PII400. One of our developers just got a brand new toshiba and he raves about it. I don't know the specific model but I can find out if anyone is interested in toshiba's. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org The IQ and the life expectancy of the average American recently passed each other going in the opposite direction.
Definantly.. i'm interested in buy a laptop for myself, to run some variant of linux, i'd be interested in knowing which model it is. thanks, Export. On Tuesday 27 May 2003 12:45 am, Ben Rosenberg wrote:

And since it is a USB mass storage device, you can also use it with digikam.. a nice gui program for accessing your camera and other pics. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S.
