Help! I'm stuck in YaST and I can't get out!
Ever since I installed the latest KDE 3.1.2 I've noticed that the GUI YaST gets stuck in a loop if I have any conflicts while installing software. I actually completely reinstalled my system just to get everything cleaned up. The problem went away until I put the latest KDE and QT stuff back. Have others seen this as well? STH

Sure, Mike's compiles will fix the YaST problem but create several others in the process. I can confirm it easily. If you think you can live with the other bugs, this is certainly the answer to the yast bug. Hi Johnny, As I mentioned, Mike's packages do indeed work to fix the YaST2 problem of the continous loop thingy, but creates other problems in doing so. The simplest example I could point out would be to bring up the program KBear, which has a "window" inside a "window" setup. You'll notice that the gadget buttons for closing, maximizing & minimizing are available for both the main window and the inner window. What you won't see on the inner window gadgets are the graphics you see on the main window buttons! Scribus also uses the window inside a window setup as do other programs for KDE. Scribus first brought the problem to my attention as I was experiencing other problems QT related. Going back to the SuSE build fixed things, but brought back the YaST problem, but I can deal with it better than the others that Mike's builds create. I posted all this in another mail a few weeks ago when I learned of the problem, but I believe I might only posted in on the SuSE-kde list, so you may not have read it. I guess one could go to the 3.2 builds to cure the problems/bugs both versions of the 3.1.2 builds gives us, but then 3.2 is probably not a good idea yet. :o) Pat -- --- KMail v1.5.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

[SNIP a more detailed example from Pat] Thank you Pat :o) Then it comes down to whether or not one uses the bug ridden functionality. In my case I don't, so Mike's packages work fine for my daily use of KDE 3.1.2. Different people -- different needs. :o) Are there any list of _all_ the bugs introduced with Mike's packages? Just so people can check if it's a good idea for them to go that way. Best regards :o) Johnny :o)

Johnny, I don't know that anyone has actually noticed the bugs enough to complain, as would appear to be the case from the many, "huh, what bugs?" mails in response to my warning in using Mike's builds. They are there, but it may be that the programs I use are more susceptible to those bugs than what everyone else uses daily. I am sure those that do not notice them now will, but I think the urge to have the latest numbered builds overrides logic sometimes. ;o) I am in YaST2 much less than KDE, so I think I'll stick with what works best there. So if you want to use kde 3.1.2 you have a choice between using a broken qt or a broken yast ? Questions is kde 3.1.2 worth the bother for any improvements over 3.1.1 ? is there another source of kde 3.1.2 for 8.2 that doesn't have these problems ? would it be worth compiling it from source ? Mike

Yes, Ben, these do fix the YaST2 infinite loop bug, but create several others in the process. I guess the user has to decide what they use the most YaST2 or KDE in order to decide which build to use. If you stay in YaST2 all the time, then Mike's builds, the ones you show above, are your best bet, but if you use KDE more, stay with the last SuSE builds. That are not the newest, at least qt3 can be obtained newer. Get file ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.2-i386/base/contlist.bz2 Which contains a list of rpms available for suse: $ zgrep qt3\; contlist.bz2 | grep -v src qt3;3.1.1-71;i586;base qt3;3.1.2-40;i586;kde qt3;3.1.2-46;i586;suse-people qt3;3.2.0b1-6;i586;suse-people So qt3 is available in version 3.2 from the suse-people directory. (The value in the last field refers where one can find the rpm). The file includes the suse rpms servers packman, usr-local-bin, funktronics, etc. So, if an rpm is not listed in this file, one will have a hard time to find it anywhere else. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

In general, at the root of the SuSE ftp server there's a file called ls-Ral.txt.gz. It is a list of all files in all directories you can get to. A look through that one should turn up all sorts of interesting stuff

Mike For the enquiring minds, QT3-3.2 breaks my SysvInit Editor. I had to go back to qt3-3.1.1-71 to get back to normal i.e., no Yast loop, SysV editor working, and cursor pointing to the left, but now opening File Manager minimises whatever I was last looking at.
Small price to pay I guess. Richard
