Now what? How do I fix this, and while I am at it, how do I change the "Windows" menu selection to "DOS"? tia (suse 8.0 on an HP Laptop) tia John R. Sowden American Sentry Systems, Inc. U.L. I'm assuming that you mean that you've overwritten your MBR. IIRC, boot from your recovery media (either the boot floppy that you should've made; or use the install CD and choose to boot the installed system rather than install.) Once the system is booted, execute /sbin/lilo as root. This will rewrite your MBR. To change the LILO prompt to read "DOS" instead of "Windows," simply edit /etc/lilo.conf and replace the line that reads "label = windows" so that it reads "label = DOS." Once this is done, run /sbin/lilo again. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@VISI.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE
:top It was suggested that I try the suse cd or the rescue floppy. Unfortunately, they both perform the same function: The execute the "installed os", meaning that the execute the mbr, and in my case run dos, a fine operating system, second only to linux, but its not linux. Running the rescue page sets up a copy of linux in a ram disk. I am unable to mount my hda6, even after editing the /etc/fstab (unable to access the file system ext2) thoughts? this must be a common problem, as I tried another boot manager (partita), bit only accesses the first 4 partitions. no problem, to remove it from the mbr, just run fdisk /mbr, goto top. Don't use the "boot installed os" from the initial boot screen. Start up the installation and go through the initial screens (I think it's just the language selection). You'll then get a screen where you select what to do. I think the choices are Install, Update and "boot installed os". That's where you should select boot installed.
Running the rescue page sets up a copy of linux in a ram disk. I am unable to mount my hda6, even after editing the /etc/fstab (unable to access the file system ext2)
What exactly do you type to mount it, and what exactly is the error message? //Anders
Problem solved. 1) Inserted Suse Disk #1 2) Selected "Install" 3) Selected English 4) Selected Run Installed OS 5) I then logged in as root 6) I then edited /etc/lilo.conf (to change the label "Windows" to DOS" 7) I also had to edit numbers and spaces out of the labels. 8) I then ran /sbin/lilo (as root). This wrote the info in the lilo.conf file to the mbr. If there are any errors, it won't write, and it won't tell you it won't write. 9) I when shut down, and restarted the computer. I got the Suse Lilo menu with my mods, and it went to linux, dos, correctly. Thank you (I spelled this out for others to copy, as this seems like a common problem).
