I use SuSE 9.1 with the default XFree86 that comes with the distro (4.4.0-rc1 I THINK). I want to change to xorg 6.8.1. Is it safe? will sax2 generate a config file that will work? What packages are needed? Should I uninstall xf86 first or install it while X is running? Thanks!

Steven, I can only speak for myself, but update the files the same as you would any files on your SuSE rpm system. You'll find that these exactly replace the old XFree86 stuff and work quite well. I'm pretty sure most everyone that have gone to the x.org files did the same thing. Of course, 9.2 comes standard with x.org. Once installed while booted into KDE or Gnome or whatever, you will want to restart the X server to put everything into motion. Have fun! Lee
hello, on 2 computers, 2 problems with xorg : 1. nvidia nforce2 integrated. "nvidia" driver used to work at dual head 3200x1200 perfectly with 9.1, i only can get dual head 2800x1050 i tried with the same XF86Config file, or by midifiiing the generated file, but at the end the screen is unstable (bugs on screen), and i can hear a noise (bad bad bad ...). 2. radeon 9700 mobility : i can't get the dual head working, still working on it, the options seems to be different with xorg ??? but i am happy because 9.2 woked for me with 100% hardware detection on a brand new sony laptop (with bluetooth and screen and all ...) except for my external usb tv tuner, but i'm working on it. 1. Make a backup of your /etc/X11/XF86Config just to be safe. ;) 2. Install xorg in Runlevel 3 (No X!) 3. cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/xorg.conf 4. Test with issuing 'startx' (probably no need to tweak xorg.conf) 5. If all is well, go to Runlevel 5 I had no problems with xorg on 9.1. Please do mind that several applications starting with XFree or xf86 are now renamed to xorg or so... ;) Cheers, Leen
