ppp peer (provider) resets the connection every 36 hours
I have posted this before, and have not found a solution. I get disconnected by my ISP after 36 hours. Setup is SuSE 8.1, Adsl through Speedtouch usb, Kinternet, Dial on demand, auto reconnect. The problem is I do not get reconnected automatically. I guess I could set up a cronjob to kill pppd and restart it manually every 35 hours for example. Manually, I have to : killall smpppd smpppd & (that's the easy part in a cronjob) but then I need to click the Kinternet Icon and choose 1. reconnect to the server and 2. dial in. How could I do that in a cron job? Thanks FX -- ______________________ Courtesy of SuSE Linux nibz.org
Hi Do You mean, that even if you have line-activity, it will disconnect? If line-activity keeps the connection live, then do a cron-job for example every 30 minutes, that does a "ping -c5 <some-host>", and it would keep the connection alive. Or better yet, make You e-mail client to poll the mail-host every minute, like I have. Our provider disconnects every 72 hours from connection, if no activity has seen in the last 12 hours or so... I'm not sure about the time-out value. Now it is on all the time, because our mail-clients polls mail-host every minute. Jaska.

Instead why not try to figure out why you aren't reconnecting automatically? Are you running something like PPPoE? I get automatic reconnects just fine here. Nick

PPPoa I'm using. fxf -- ______________________ Courtesy of SuSE Linux nibz.org
You may want to look into using expect. It is a program to turn
interactive sessions into non-interactive sessions. I use this at work to
automate tasks that would otherwise require human responses.
