Re: [SLE] KDE 2.1.1 crashes on start
yes here is something that might help
download and install all the new qt 2.3.0 version packages the site to download from is the following ( It contains the rpms for suse sparc.)
http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/SuSE_Linux_7.1_(SPARC).html
Then download the following files:
qt-2.3.0-1.sparc
qt-devel-2.3.0-1.sparc
qt-experimental-2.3.0-1.sparc
qt-extensions-2.3.0-1.sparc
qt-man-2.3.0-1.sparc
now to install use yast(type yast in a terminal or console..you should be root for that)
then go to Maintain packages section (install update)
once you get there press your down arrow(a menu will come up) choose directory as the source for installation...
It will prompt you for the path of the directory from which to install...
type the name of the directory where you downloaded the packages to... ENTER
you will see a list of the files in that directory.
use the spacebar to place an X next to the packages you need to install( they might have an o next to them first..don't worry about that)
once you select packages press F10....
wait till it says Installation complete
when its done go out by pressing escape..and you take it from there..
not sure that will completely solve the problem though.....
later

I too have updated to KDE 2.1.1 on SuSE 7.1 using Yats1 and have found that when upgrading, KDE looses DCOP. I have updated everything I thought I would need and now see that KDE needs a different version of qt-experimental than is posted at the SuSE ftp site. *FRUSTRATION*
What is the procedure for downloading and installing the required RPM (qt-experimental-2.3.0 ) from the command line? (Yes I am unfamiliar with Linux terminology, and just muddle along with Linux, getting things to work as I can)
TIA for your consideration and help.

OK, I have fixed the problem with dcopserver not starting. The problem is that in the KDE 2.1.1 update folder the qt-experimental version will NOT work with KDE 2.1.1. It should be qt-experimental-2.3.0 but for some reason they have put qt-experimental-2.2.3. The correct version is available from ftp.kde.org.
However, now that that is fixed, when I start KDE I get crash warnings like the following:
KCrash: crashing.... crashRecursionCounter = 2 KCrash: application name: ksplash path = <unknown>
etc. for ksplash, knotify, kinternet, ksmserver. Then KDE crashes completely and exits.
Any hints? Nothing was turned up in any searches.
TIA
Corvin
