Has anyone here got the xcdroast non-root mode working with the xcdroast that is included in SuSE Linux 8.1? I have tried to activate non-root mode several times now, but I still cannot start xcdroast as a regular user.

I think that is due to the permission on the IDE-SCSI device.
I have the following permissions (read as root): david@dt:~> su Password: dt:/home/david # ls -al /dev/sg4 crw-r----- 1 root disk 21, 4 2002-09-09 22:24 /dev/sg4 dt:/home/david # ls -al /dev/sr0 brw------- 1 david disk 11, 0 2002-09-09 22:24 /dev/sr0 dt:/home/david # ls -al /dev/sr1 brw------- 1 david disk 11, 1 2002-09-09 22:24 /dev/sr1 dt:/home/david # /dev/sg4 is the ide-scsi CD-RW and /dev/sr0 is the SCSI DVD-ROM. I wonder why I get 'david' as the owner on both /dev/sr0 and /dev/sr1? Best regards, David List
/dev/sg4 is the ide-scsi CD-RW and /dev/sr0 is the SCSI DVD-ROM. I wonder why I get 'david' as the owner on both /dev/sr0 and /dev/sr1? Could you please tell me how you determined that your device is /dev/sg4? I am trying to solve another problem but it requires knowing this information. Finding that my drive is /dev/cdrom is easy. That's in fstab. it is also easy with Konqueror to find
David List wrote: that /dev/cdrom is a link to /dev/sr0 but it is much less obvious that my system is using /dev/sg2. I only stumbled on this information when I ran cdparanoia in verbose mode but there must be some more direct method of finding that /dev/sr0 is associated with /dev/sg2. Damon Register

AS ROOT only not a USER. If SuSE try "hwinfo --scsi" or "hwinfo --cdrom". "cdrecord --scanbus" will show the SCSI information if a scsi or ide-scsi dev is know. How about: cdrecord --scanbus or hwinfo --cdrom -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. I say, by the grace of God, I am what I am.

The strange is that with hwinfo, the drives are recognized as /dev/sr0 (the DVD-ROM) and /dev/sr1 (the CD-RW). I got /dev/sg4 from what both K3B and xcdroast initially suggested. Has my installation made a wrong setup of the drives? Best regards, David List

Has my installation made a wrong setup of the and that is the problem. Those obvious things such as hwinfo --cdrom or hwinfo --scsi don't give the complete information. cdrecord or cdparanoia can give me the information but that is an indirect route. Those programs are having to figure out the association from somewhere. There has to be somewhere a direct route to show what is the association between /dev/sr0 and /dev/sg4 (or whatever is might be).
I am desiring to edit an existing FAQ on CD ripping but this is one problem that needs to be answered in order to make the FAQ truly useful. This has shown up in a lot of posts from people struggling with CD recording or ripping problems. Someone will always answer with "just set permission of /dev/sg0" but that is only good if his system is using /dev/sg0. I must find the way to determine the link or association between /dev/srX and /dev/sgX. Damon Register
