[opensuse] OT I need an interested developer
Hello SuSE people, Please allow me to apologize and beg forgiveness for my OT post, but I figured I could reach the greatest amount of people here on this list. This could be a very worthwhile thing. I need to find a developer who would be willing and able to develop software which would help thousands of sight impaired people and even possibly be profitable for him/her. If anyone is interested or curious wou can find details at: www.hiddenlake.net/Prsonal/reader.html If anyone can supply me with mailing lists where the devs hang out, I would appreciate it immensely. Please reply to me privately as I certainly don;t want a long OT thread to annoy you all. Thanks, and again, please forgive my OT post. First - that list is broken. Second, what you are talking about is "accessibility", usually known as "a11y". Go to http://projects.gnome.org/accessibility/ for people and information focussed on a11y.

Not if you put the "e" back in "Personal", it isn't .... -- Robin K Wellington "Harbour City" New Zealand -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks for the reply Tauno, and for pointing that out. Left out the e in Personal. CCorrected URL is below

Thanks, I will do that. Bob S -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, I'm not sure it is. What he appears to be talking about is screen imaging of paper documents. i.e. a video-or-computer-assisted magnifying glass. The devices I'm thinking of are described at http://www.afb.org/section.aspx?DocumentID=221 or at the bottom of the page at http://www.livingmadeeasy.org.uk/communication/magnifiers-1197/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hello Dave, Thanks for your input. Yes, you are correct. You are describing machines that are commercially available and are completely self contained and or can use the computer monitor independently with no computer assistance. I have never seen one for $800 though and I have used one for $200. They are still bulky things that require a lot of space and still require moving the material around under the camera lens. In my proposal the process would be done through computer software wher the magnification and scrolling would be with the mouse or cursor keys by combining camera and graphical viewer software. as I explained in the URL that I posted. www.hiddenlake.net/Personal/reader.html lNo big bulky machine and no moving of material, and it would be free! for visibility impaired people. Now I just have to get someone interested to tackle it.That's why I posted here. A very large number of knowledgeable people here. Again I must apologize for the OT post but I think it is a worthwhile and important project. If I can recommend somewhat different procedure. For majority of reading you can take picture of the pages and then read magnified images. It can actually increase comfort as you don't have to handle camera, text and computer at the same time, like with live video camera. Maybe, using digital pocket camera to take page picture and then you can read images using Gwenview, or some similar application. They allow magnification and then just can just click to grab image, move around and read. See [1] for more details. If you need more amplification you can use some existing screen magnifier, or you can use magnifier directly, depends on a type of vision problem. What do you think about idea? Is it a problem to take images and then just read? Is there anything that makes you not comfortable with that method?

Asking for developer is kind of off topic, but particular problem is not. It is not only your problem, so ideas how to solve should be public, specially when it involves software included in openSUSE. [1] Some time ago I used 3 Mpix camera instead of scanner. Image is about original document size with picture at 50%. Gwenview allows sizes between 64% and 1600% of original picture. From 200% I can see pixels, which is more aesthetic problem then practical, as text is readable far beyond 200%. Even if we stop at 200% that is 4 times magnification. Picture can be moved with mouse in few ways. 1) click and hold left button somewhere in the picture and move mouse. 2) There is field on top left presenting image and smaller presenting what user can see in the window, click and grab smaller and move around image. 3) Also there are classic sliding bars. In Gwenview you can use OpenGL image viewer that seems to be even more comfortable to use with mouse only. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks for your interest Rajko Yes that is the procedue that I utilized and outlined in the URL that I posted, using a webcam and Gwenview. Maybe U wasn't clear enough but my proposal sugggests combining th picture taking and viewing instead of two sepaarate operations. That could be qyite cumbersome trying to read a book or newspaper.

It's a very good idea. Please visit my URL again. Now lets combine those steps and we will have a wonderful useful piece of software .....< spip the rest for brevity>...... Bob S -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
