That's stuff from the mc interface. If you are using mc, and want your history, hit "esc" then "h".
Hey! but I'm using mc sometimes and plain shell sometimes. I want to
use
em both! In the previous version of the mc there was not such funny things!
Well I compiled my own mc, with the latest version. If I hit
to remove the mc display, and I hit the up arrow, the bash history is there for all commands I ran with the mc interface not present. When the mc interface is present, I need to use "esc -h". Maybe there is some trick to it, but I've never had any problems with the above method. You just need to remember which shell or sub-shell you are talking to.
If you are talking about a bash session in a new xterm, each xterm should open up with a fresh history of it's own.
This might be a good question for the mc maillist.
I'm using LFS (Linux From Scratch) myself, but now I need to prepare installation of Linux with all this KDE and Offices for non-programmer stuff. And I don't want to build any packages myself. I want to create YaST install script which will automatically install Linux to the user's box. So, no source builds :( I think, there should be workaround for this problem!
