Hi, Does anybody have any recommendations or warnings about ADSL ISPs in the UK? I will also need (perhaps as part of the package) a mail address. (I'm currently with BTO but their refusal to support anything other than Outlook Express has finally stung me into action). Thanks, Dave

I'm with Pipex (www.xtreme.pipex.net) and use a Netgear router, service is good, and they don't stop in-bound traffic, which is good as I host a web server on it. They also seem pretty cool about Linux users, although they don't explicitly support Linux. You get a mail address from them as well. The price is also very good, IIRC it's still under 25 quid per month, including VAT for the 512/256 service, and not a lot more for the 1024/256 service. Static IPs are available at a small additional cost I think, although as an early adopter, I have what they call a 'sticky' IP, which means that strictly speaking it's dynamic, but hardly ever changes (in the 2 years I've been with them, it's changed once - when they changed the network block they were allocated from). -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

Hello
As some friends' IT guy, I have recommended Pipex and PlusNet (
www.plus.net )
You might also want to consider http://www.eclipse.net.uk/ They offer competitive prices at under GBP 25 and also static IP addresses (usually 2: block of 4 with 2 usable) at no additional cost. They also offer a variety of equipment to choose your setup from (if you haven’t already purchase your own). They seem to be reliable and the contention is not bad at all. Eclipse [www.eclipse.net.uk] is good. They supply routers for ADSL, which means that they are OS neutral, which is always good in an ISP. As for mail, I have <anything>[at]archipelago[dot]eclipse[dot]co[dot]uk. There are various options on how they do this - I understand that they also support <anything>[at]eclipse[dot]co[dot]uk. And there are a few options on the mail boxes you can have with an account. HTH Vince Littler

You should have a look at UK Free Software Network (http://www.ukfsn.org.uk), which offers pretty good packages, and which has been very reliable in the 3 months I have had it to date. You can get a package with a fixed IP address, and a lot of other extras. Even better, the owner, Jason Clifford, is giving ALL the non-running costs proceeds to fund free software development in the UK - he gave his first cheque to the Association for Free Software (http://www.affs.org.uk) a couple of months ago. -- Best wishes Kevin Donnelly www.kyfieithu.co.uk - Meddalwedd Rhydd yn Gymraeg

Personally, I use Eclipse (www.eclipse.net.uk); if you decide to go with them, you can use my referral code (which gives me a small discount off my bill :) ). However, there is also the UK Free Software Network (www.ukfsn.org) which is a non-profit ISP set up to support Free Software projects in the UK. I haven't signed up with them because they didn't have an ADSL offering at the time. -- David Smith | Tel: +44 (0)1454 462380 Home: +44 (0)1454 616963 STMicroelectronics | Fax: +44 (0)1454 462305 Mobile: +44 (0)7932 642724 1000 Aztec West | TINA: 065 2380 GPG Key: 0xF13192F2 Almondsbury | Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com BRISTOL, BS32 4SQ | Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk

One that hasn't been mentioned is Freedom to Surf. www.f2s.com £22.50 per month , static ip, website, unlimited (i think?) emails, etc.. Very good customer service - happy for users to use Linux. Has been very reliable - connection dropped twice in two years both for planned maintenance work Tim

AAISP is very tech friendly. They are happy for you to run your own DNS/Mail/Web etc. or do it for you. They were very quick in hooking me up with a wires only service. You get a static IP address and one domain. Regards, Jon -- Snowblink: http://www.snowblink.co.uk/

Many thanks to all who made suggestions. I'll check them out and pick one. I'm sure I won't go wrong with one from the list: Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) Demon Eclipse Freedom to Surf Nildram Pipex PlusNet UK Free Software Network Thanks, Dave
