Graphical UI for the Advance Package Tool
For those that miss a graphical package installer in e.g. SuSE-8.0 or those who already use the Advance Package Tool (APT) functionality; you can now use synaptic. Package dependency checks, downloading, and installing packages can be done by this frontend to apt. For those already running apt, it is sufficient to execute: "apt-get install synaptic" (If it is not there yet, try it again some time later as I just placed the rpm at the server. And the server needs some time to build the apt repository) More information about this graphical download and install application and apt at: http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm The rpm is not a perfect one. The original rpm spec file uses the application consolehelper (I guess being part of the usermode rpm) to run the application for a non root user. I was not able to find the usermode rpm for SuSE. Being able to run synaptic as root is already a very good start :) Let me know if you've fixes for the synaptic spec file! For now synaptic can be launched from the root login or by executing: xhost +; su -c "DISPLAY=:0.0 /usr/sbin/synaptic"; xhost - -- Richard Bos Democracy cost a fortune
Not showing up for me almost 4 hours after the post. Unless it was placed on another server I do not yet know about. Cheers. On Sunday 12 May 2002 2:58 pm, Richard Bos wrote:

"WinFree and Lovin' it. SuSE Rox Linux! Registered Linux User # 240512" Speaking of registered Linux user - where would I go? I remember there was a site but can't even begin to recall the address. TIA, Curtis On Sunday 12 May 2002 21:11, Mark Doucette wrote:

It was there just after I posted the message, I guess you're not having the component "extra" in you're /etc/apt/sources.list file. Have a look at the example sources.list files at (depending on your suse version): http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/7.3-i386/examples/sources.list.FT... http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.0-i386/examples/sources.list.FT... More information about synaptic can be obtained as well as at: http://distro.conectiva.com.br/projetos/46/
Cheers.

richard@dar:~> apt-cache show synaptic Package: synaptic Section: Applications/System Installed Size: 692 Maintainer: (null) Version: 0.16-rb1 Filename: (null) Description: WINGs based graphical front-end for apt. Synaptic is a graphical front-end for APT (Advanced Package Tool) written with the Window Maker toolkit. It attempts to be a lot easier to use than other existing APT front-ends. Instead of using trees to display packages, Synaptic is heavily based on a powerful package filtering system. That greatly simplifies the interface while giving a lot more flexibility to browse through very long package lists. -- Richard Bos Democracy cost a fortune
