[opensuse] Mozilla Firefox problem on SuSE 10.0
There are a few problems with Mozilla Firefox on SuSE 10.0 that I would like to solve. 1. Yahoo Mail Beta: the "compose" tab doesn't work (just shows an empty tab), thus I can't send mail. 2. PayPal Shipping: When using USPS shipping from the US to International destinations, the Java dialog window that opens to print the customs and shipping label doesn't work on SuSE. Domestic shipping works. The Java plugin is 1.4.2_13-b06, as shown in "about:plugins". 3. Certain websites with WMV video content don't work (shows "plugin needed" but no plugin was found). Is there a way to make this work? The Edit->Preferences->Contents->File Types shows some existing associations but doesn't give a way for me to add an external application such as xine. This had been a problem for quite some time, with Firefox 1.5.0.x as well as 2.0.0.4 that was recently installed by YOU. All the above works fine with Firefox on Windows XP. Any hints and tips? -Ti -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
1. Yahoo Mail Beta: the "compose" tab doesn't work (just shows an empty tab), thus I can't send mail.
Strange. It works perfectly on my system. Granted I'm no longer on 10.0... but the differences between 10.2 and a fully updated 10.0 aren't that big so as to cause you problems with Yahoo mail. As a workaround until this is solved, just switch back to the old Yahoo mail. There is a link on your Yahoo Mail page to do that.
2. PayPal Shipping: When using USPS shipping from the US to International destinations, the Java dialog window that opens to print the customs and shipping label doesn't work on SuSE. Domestic shipping works. The Java plugin is 1.4.2_13-b06, as shown in "about:plugins".
Just guessing here, but have you tried moving to a newer version of Java? 1.4.2 is quite an old version, and it's possible that the Java being used for that window is making calls to 1.5 or higher functions. I've seen this kind of thing happen with other sites in Windows as well as Linux and older versions of Java.

Can't speak for Xine, but if you install MPlayer, w32codocs and mplayerplugin from the 3rd party repositories, embedded video works fine. No tinkering needed.
All the above works fine with Firefox on Windows XP. Any hints and tips?

I tried installing the Java 1.6.0 rpms from the opensuse.org website but they produce failed dependency errors and refused to install. I don't want to break anything else by using rpm --force.

I actually have mplayer and w32codecs installed but couldn't get it to work on my machine. It plays the sound but just gives a blank blue window. Xine, on the other hand, works fine.

If you just downloaded the Java RPM, you are likely missing the various dependencies. Why not add the repositories to YAST, or use a repository manager like Smart. It would make adding packages to your system a whole lot easier. You can get Smart (version 0.51) for SUSE 10.0 here: http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/rpm-navigation.php?cat=System/smart/ This package from SUSE Guru has all the main 3rd party repositories already added in. Note, these packages have dependencies on some python packages that you will need to install as well I'd suggest you install 3 packages from Guru... smart, smart-gui and smart-addons This should help you beat down the dependency issues you're having with updating Java.
I actually have mplayer and w32codecs installed but couldn't get it to work on my machine. It plays the sound but just gives a blank blue window. Xine, on the other hand, works fine.
Any console errors? Do you have the latest builds from Packman?
My Windows XP box has Java 1.6.0_01.
That might be your answer there. Update to Java 1.6 (or at least 1.5) and see if it helps. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Particularly on 10.0 there were conflicts with 1.4.x and 1.5.x. OOo in particular was told to only use 1.4.2. You should be able to go ahead and remove 1.4.x and install 1.5 without a problem. I beleive that's what I did on my 10.0 system.

Like this? http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/mplayer_blue.jpg I forget how I solved that, but there's something amiss with your config.

You can move to that as well, if you want. Just do a search for SUSE 1. rpm files. HTH! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I could install 1.6.0 without any problems. Have you executed "rpm -e jre-1.4.2_13-b061.4.2_13-b061"?

Did you resolve this yet?
java-1_4_2-sun-jdbc is needed by (installed) sesam_srv-2.0.2-16
[other dependancies cut] Have you looked at updating the apps that are dependent on Java 1.4? I don't know all the versions, but I do see that you are running several older versions of some of the apps, including your backup util (sesam_srv)... which is quite old. If you try to install a single rpm which has loads of other apps dependent on it (like Java) you are definitely going to have issues. Have you tried updating using Smart or YAST, and using those tools to resolve your dependency issues? Or are you only using rpm -Uvh on the CLI?

I don't know the solution to this problem, but I did note that you are not using a SUSE build of MPlayer... you have a Fedora build installed. This probably will work OK, but no guarantees. You really should snag a SUSE build of MPlayer from Packman or use Smart/YAST with the 3rd party repositories to install the latest MPlayer. That alone may resolve your issues. At the time I downloaded mplayer, that was the only RPM I could find. I'll look for a suse-specific one again. Thanks for your help. -Ti -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
