[opensuse] How to enable sound in Gnome installed via KDE?
Hi, I am using openSUSE 11.4 with KDE desktop (default). Now from Yast, I installed two other desktops - GNOME and XFCE. The GNOME version is 2.32 to which I can login. But in the GNOME as well as XFCE desktops, I am not getting any login sounds. I am able to play the songs, but the login sound is not coming. I checked in GNOME -> Menu -> Control Center -> Sound but not able to resolve the issue. Thanks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

In a terminal, as user, run 'gnome-control-center &' and check under the "Startup Programs" tab that the "GNOME Login Sound" checkbox is enabled. hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It was already enabled (before I do anything) but still was not able to get the sound. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The openSUSE Gnome default setup does not have a login sound configured/shipped, that's why you don't get one there. You'll have to copy the login sound (prferably .ogg) to /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/desktop-login.ogg Why is there no login sound by default? The gnome team simply could never agree on a proper sound to play. Too long, too ugly, too annoying. And generally: the login sound plays at bad times (start you notebook in a full auditorium and you know what I mean). Well I just copied the KDE login sound to this location. I copied the file 'KDE-Sys-Log-In-Short.ogg' (from /usr/share/sounds) to /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo and changed the name to 'desktop-login.ogg' (hope that changing name is required). Now the login sound comes in KDE. Where should I copy the same file to get the login sound in XFCE too?
