Dual Heads under SuSE 8.0
Are dual heads still supported under SuSE 8.0 and is this very hard to configure? I have two like video cards and two like displays and want to configure two screens. Much thanks for any info. -CC
Hi I have 7.3 with Matrox G450 dual-head display card, and it is working perfectly. I don't know about 8.0, but there is just no reason why it should not work even better that 7.3 (allthough I don't know how it could be any better?). Jaska. I have a Matrox 450 that configured on 8.0 as part of the install, and an older machine with a pair of nVidia cards that also work perfectly. I've been up to 6 cards on 7.2, but not had a chance to try 8.0 with that many yet <g> -- Lester Caine ----------------------------- L.S.Caine Electronic Services

Hello, Yes, they are supported. And I have just "upgraded" from a Matrox G450DH LE 16M to G450DH 32M and guess what folks ? At boot-up , SUSE 8.0 DOES an auto-config with options to tweak your setup. I was blown away..... No more dropping to init 2 or 3, in order to reconfigure your graphic cards. What a dream setup, with WindowMaker 0.8 running a traditional dualhead setup on two 17" monitors. Running KDE's Kicker on Screen 0, desktop 8 and GNOME's Panel on Screen 1, desktop 8 Endless combos and eases everyday chores. -- Kemdi IN_SuSE_d Since 5.2 123792 of counter.li.org ICQ:112290572

Sure.
and is this very hard to configure?
I would say no, but I guess it depends

If the cards/monitors are similar it should be a breeze. I used to have two Matrox cards (millenium I/II) and sax2 picked 'em right up. Later I changed one of them with a nVidia (leadtek Vanta) and subsequently had to jump through some hoops, but all in all there shouldn't be insurmountable problems. What I usually do is: Let sax2 do it's thing, and then tweak XF86Config afterwards. In 7.3 I *had* to do it like that, 'cause sax2 wouldn't configure the Xinerama bit. With 8.0 I did the same thing, but I suspect that I could've just let sax2 handle everything... At this point I have a 15" and a 17" monitor, an in order to not have an inaccessible area of the desktop, I rotated the 15" a quarter turn, so that it sits on the side. Refresh is slow, but I like it better than the alternative... Dual head is nice :)
Much thanks for any info.
Sure. My pleasure :) hth Jon Clausen

I don't really understand how did you rotate the 15" a quarter (90 degree?) turn? because all the character/gui/font will be a quarter turned too... (must turn my head 90 degree to read it)
Dual head is nice :)
It is...

The matrox card accepts an Option "Rotate" "CCW" meaning Counter-Clock-Wise, in XF86Config ;) Simple, nifty and refresh is slow... ;-P (You should have seen me trying to work the mouse, while the display was rotated -and the monitor was not... ;D Now *there's* a test for your hand/eye coordination + motor skills...)

Truly. I'm putting some money aside, so I can get me a 17" more. It's all very nice to rotate some 15"... but refresh is *sloow* (Plus the red color is dead, but mainly... refresh is.........s...l...o...w..w.) Jon Clausen
