[SLE] Upgrading a few essential packages ..
Hi all, For the first time since I installed Linux in June, I need to upgrade some of my packages . I have MySQL 3.22.32 , PHP3.0.16 statically linked to Apache 1.3.12 I need to upgrade to MySQL 3.23 , PHP 4.02 and maybe recompile Apache with DSO support and SSL . I've never upgraded packages before .. a few questions.. Do I point the --prefix= to the old paths eg /usr/local/apache & /usr/local/mysql ? Would the new compile rewrite over the older binaries ? What precautions should I take so as not to lose my working setup ? Wouldn't I have to reconfigure httpd.conf from scratch ( i have 2 name-based virtual hosts and a few protected folders ) . Further, is there anything to be gained in installing *both* PHP3 & PHP4 ... If I install just PHP4 would it recognize the .php3 extension ? Would the old scripts still work ? Finally, My programmers want me to install a Java environment for a Chat program we plan to develop for use on our site ? Is there a good PHP based solution to this ? How do Servlets & JSP compare with PHP , performance wise ? In teory you can install php3 and php4 if they are installed like modules (see faq of php4). Yes, you can use the old extension php3 and use php4. Yes, php4 is 99% compliant with php3

Yes, there is a chat example in www.php.org. -- Simeó Reig Barcelona (Spain) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Simeo & Co, I'd ideally like to have the option of reverting to my original config ..if the new compile fails . Take apache for example : The source is installed in /usr/local/src/apache_1.3.12 The package was installed to /usr/local/apache using ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache The /lib and /bin for apache were auto installed under the apache root . Now I want to recompile apache with some diff options. A Linux book i have suggests that i could install the new compile to say .. /usr/local/apache2 and create a symlink /usr/local/apache---> /usr/local/apache2 ..I am not quite sure how to go about it ...Can anyone help ?
