[opensuse] packages in local installation vs internet installation
One of the drawbacks listed on the opensuse website for installing from CD images is, "Due to size limitations of CD images, you get only a subset of all packaged software for openSUSE." What packaged software is missing from the CD images? Thanks, Ross -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I am having difficulty finding this information on the web site. I came across this: http://en.opensuse.org/Package_List which does not help that much, other than to verify that this equation is approximately true: CD[1-5] + non-OSS CD = DVD But there is an implication that some packages are present only in an internet installation. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It's a bit more than an implication. It's actually a fact. The present size of the 32bit repository is about 6GB. This includes i586/ i686/ and noarch/ . The x86_64 repository is around 3.3GB, but doesn't include any noarch/ or 32bit packages. Adding the noarch/ packages takes it up to around 5.4GB. As you can see, to make an image that will fit on a DVD+/-R (4.35GB), quite a few packages are going to need to be left off the DVD. Those are those that you'll find available through an internet installation. I appreciate the reply. So these packages were excluded in order to keep the installation media to a single DVD? I wanted to see just what those packages were so I grabbed this: http://giannaros.org/suse/package_list/openSUSE-10.2-GM-DVD-i386-list.txt and this: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.2/repo/oss/INDEX.gz I then goofed around on the command line and wound up with a list of 2347 excluded packages (not counting x86_64 and ppc). Seeing which packages had been excluded was interesting (and useful).
