Problem is solved now by using Yast2 and configuring the bootloader with
acpi=off.
For some reason, when I gave this at the boot prompt it didn't work, that
confused me a little.
However everything is fine now - thanks for your help.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Have you enabled your ethernet-card using yast2? Sometimes deleting it and enabling it again it works. Don't ask me why.

Well, PeterB, when you get all the hardware makers to implement a good version of ACPI in their motherboards, then you will see the problem go away! The problem is not in software, but the hardware as some chipset makers do it right, some half right and some just crappy! That's where you need to look or complain for your fix.
