Suse 8.1 on Dell Inspiron 8200
When installing suse on an inspiron 8200, it gets to Installation Settings, Software, and comes up with a message "No Packages" and will go no further. This is a dual boot system and it detects the correct particians. It had redhat 7.3 on it before and Suse is being installed from DVD. However, installing from CDROM works. Looks like on boot, the DVD is read, but later, it thinks it is a CDROM. Is there a setting somewhere to fix this? Art

I've just had the same problem on my Toshiba. There is a work around documented at http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/mlasars_8.1_dvdinstall.html. Here's the salient portion: ,---- | Symptom | | When trying to install SuSE Linux 8.1 Professional from the DVD, the | item "Software" under "Installation Settings" returns the following | error message: | | | No base Selection available | ERROR: No proposal | | | Solution | | | Select "Abort Installation" both in the current menu and in the | subsequent window to access linuxrc. Once in linuxrc, press Enter | three times to restart the installation process. | | | Now you should be able to install from the DVD. `---- <rant> This is the kind of problem that can rapidly cause a distribution to get a poor reputation, if the first thing most people see is a failure to install. SuSe should be producing corrected DVDs and ensuring that all unsold product is replaced (and providing a replacement for people who have already bought it). </rant> Steve -- ____________________________________________________________________ Steve Evans E-mail: mailto:stevee@gorbag.com WEB: http://www.gorbag.com Registered Linux user #217906: http://counter.li.org Public Encyption Key: http://www.gorbag.com/public-key.html ____________________________________________________________________ In the long run, every program becomes rococo, and then rubble. -- Alan Perlis
