RE: [SLE] This is big forum
I concur with Christopher. A big problem with the list is that subjects are often so vague that you have to read the posting to see if it is something pertinent. There's enough room in that subject line to be specific regarding the posting.

Personally, I like it as it is right now. I have a filter to separate the SuSE email list to folder, and I sort the messages by subject to make reading and responding easier. It's a bit of hassle to trim down the accumulated email since this is the only list I get that receives about 3000 emails per month. Separate lists would eventually cause someone to spam all the lists to get an answer, and that will probably start several small email wars.

One of the rules of etiquette is that the subject of a message should give some clues as to what the message is about. Examples of poorly chosen subject lines are things like "Please help" or "I'm stuck". Alas, it's often the newbies who haven't been around long enough to appreciate the value of that. Ok, here's my comments. One list is much better than many. If the list is split, then might as well move to usenet. It's great that almost anything can be asked and receive a reply here. I've spent a lot of time over at comp.lang.perl.misc. This list is a lot like c.l.p.m in that there's a large number of posts each day, and many of the posts are beginner questions. That's all of my questions. Frankly, I'm always amazed at how many people that know quite a bit about perl there, and linux here, can spend so much time helping people. That's great. comp.lang.perl.misc is know for rude people and I've had my share of rude postings. c.l.p.m is hard on people that don't follow the "rules" which is most people since most people are new and don't know the "rules." But the rules do make it easier to keep up with the volume of messages. This list is harder. I don't use a threaded mail reader -- so it's harder to follow and ignore threads. But also there's so many messages that I can't keep up the way I'd like. So, I tend to delete any message that isn't easy for me to read. For me that's three simple things: 1) A good descriptive subject. I quickly delete any message where the subject doesn't tell me what's going on. I rarely look at "please help" or "newbie" subjects. Nothing against beginners (that's me), I just don't want to spend the time reading the post to find out the real subject. 2) I'm a big fan of posting replies after the quoted material, and with the quoted material stripped WAY down. If I open a message and see only quoted material in my window then it's deleted with scrolling. I'm on about 10 lists, with two others with equal volume, so I have to find ways to weed out the mail quickly. Oh, I said I have three things. 3) I delete off topic messages. Like this one ;) AND, one other thing. Does anyone really find the [SLE] placed in the subject helpful? Don't most (all) mail clients allow you filter on other headers? I guess I can strip it in pre-processing, but it just doesn't seem like it's needed. Ok, I'll post no more off topic messages. Today. I don't think splitting the forum would make it easier to deal with for most of us. I do find it burdensome to go through the huge volume of incoming SLE email, but it's worth the cost. But suppose the forum were split into subtopics A, B, and C. I can't think of an A, B, and C such that I'd want to look at A and B but would pass on C. Unless, maybe, C was ``Newbie questions''. But of course with that arrangement, newbies whose questions weren't answered would shortly post them on the other sections anyway. Well Bill, this was discussed many times. Some people need this for sorting, other like to see it to know it's important ;-) and ... ... we started with [S.u.S.E.-Linux-e] in the beginning, negotiated to [SuSE-Linux-e] and, after the Oackland people took the list over we quickly switched to [SLE]. Again, it's a help in my "Tips" folder to see were I got it from.
