Dialup Line Disconnects When Idle
I just recently upgraded from 8.1 to 8.2. Since then, whenever I am connected to the internet for about 5 minutes or so, I am automatically disconnected (I am on a dialup). I thought it had to do with wvdial.conf. So, I changed the Idle Seconds parameter to 0 to prevent a disconnect. Unfortunately, the disconnect still occurs. I am using KPPP to make the connection. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Rick

Are you saying before your upgrade, this did NOT happen?

I would have suspected it is a setting used on the server you are calling. I doubt it is kppp, but you could check its specific config differences in /etc/ppp/peers/kppp. I haven't installed 8.2 yet (it's here but will have to wait til the weekend ;-) ), but I doubt it does anything that would cause your problem. Also check /etc/ppp/options. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. Rick, Check your modem configuration in YaST2 again and I think you will find the time setting set to 300 (5 minutes) by default. If you change that to Zero (0), your disconnect should only happen when you tell it too! Just curious, does this set ppp keepalives or
something else? Typically what ISP do is they disable
ppp keepalives on their side and set idle timeout to 5
minutes (I guess that's default value on most of the
gears) and if they don't see ppp keepalives from
customer they disconnect the link regardless what your
modem setting are.

Yep... that's exactly what I'm saying. I did not have this problem with 8.1. It only started after upgrading to 8.2.

Well, following up on your suggestion, I just checked /etc/ppp/options. There was an option in there called "Idle". It was set to 600 seconds. I just changed it. We'll see what happens. Thanks! Rick

I haven't read any of the other responses yet, but I can bet it's your ISP, trying to save bandwidth. They see an idle line after a certain period of time, and cut it off. It's easy to get around this though...what I do is once I'm connected, I fire up my GAIM, which sends a keep-alive (I think that's what it's called) every minute or so to the protocol you're logged in on (like yahoo or aim or whatever), this way it looks like your 'busy' to the ISP, and they don't cut you off near as fast (I've been able to stay online and not doing a single thing but play pysol for 4 hours and better). Even if you don't like or use chat, get a yahoo account, and just use it to sign on (set your preferences so no one will bother you). Or you can just make a cron job that would say ping -c 3 www.somesite.com & and have that run every 5 minutes or so... add an line like: */5 * * * * root ping -c 3 www.somesite.com& to your /etc/crontab file... Pagan On Tuesday 06 May 2003 22:07, John wrote:
