I have just installed SuSE 10.1 with KDE on a fresh 64-bit machine and would like to increase my screen real estate from 1024 x 768 to something slightly larger. My WinXP machine shares the same monitor via a KVM and drives it happily at 1152 x 864. That being so -- I figure there must be a setting somewhere which will help. It seems to work fine at either 1024 x 768 or 1600 x 1200 (Intel 915G and CTX VL700 monitor) but not 1152 x 864. At that res it squishes the desktop in from the sides. I know I'm being difficult but I'd like to be able to achieve 1152 x 864 which is also 4:3 aspect ratio but more importantly it suits my spectacles prescription very well. Can someone point me in the right direction please. Thanks Mike

Darryl Thanks for responding. Resizing seems to be doing nothing even with step size set to huge. I tried reducing as well as expanding. I also had the monitor at 100% in its range of adjustment. Mike

Happiest multibooting requires synchronizing some settings. Eliminating the problem you describe requires one of two things, either: 1-Dumb luck 2-Finding out what scan settings doze uses and ensuring that Linux uses the same If doze is running 1152x864 @ 85Hz, then you need to adjust xorg.conf as required to ensure X does the same. This can be as easy as changing the VertRefresh line from whatever maximum it has to cap +1 from what doze is using. e.g., if it is now 48-120 and doze is running 85, change 48-120 to 48-86. It sometimes helps also to comment away in section "Monitor" the line beginning UseModes. X seems to be smart enough in most cases to figure out the best modeline to use without any help from any Section "Modes". On my 10.0 server I run my main login at 1792x1344, but often run simultaneous session(s) on vt[8,9] @ 1600x1200 and/or 1400x1050 and/or 1280x960 and/or 1152x864 and/or 1024x768, all with UseModes commented away. My display is an ordinary Dell P991 hand-me-down. -- "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg. I was born lucky but maybe it doesn't help here ... :(

Maybe I got it wrong but the changes I made stopped KDE from launching. I renamed the xorg.conf~ backt to xorg.conf and recovered. OK - it works on 1600x1200 and 1024x768. I have run out of patience and ordered a new pair of specs. Next I'll buy a more modern screen and keep my fingers crossed and trust in my incredible luck. Thank you Felix Mike
