New 10.1 x86_64 install has NO usb connectivity
After a fatal ten-year-old motherboard problem, I finally replaced my box with an athlon dual core x86_64 4200, GAK8N Ultra-SLI, 2 SATA drives, a lota memory and a large power supply. I am in heaven! But, I cannot access any usb device. Note: I had to unplug all usb devices during install as a stall would ensue when the pre-install finished detecting hardware and was probing for usb devices. With the usb devices removed the install was a piece of cake. Reattached the usb devices prior to the software update with not problem, but no access either. drool! ;-)
But, I cannot access any usb device. Note: I had to unplug all usb devices during install as a stall would ensue when the pre-install finished detecting hardware and was probing for usb devices. I'd say the usb controller is not being properly detected... possibly because the revision is too new that the chip isn't being recognized.
Point: Kubunto 6.06 live boots fine and has usb access.
If you switch to a console (or open a shell) and 'lsmod | grep usb' you should be able to determine which modules are being loaded (and presumably are working.) Hopefully, the same modules are available with 10.1 regards, Carl

appears that usbls, sub_storage and scsi_mod are not being loaded. How do I force them to load on boot?

No, but I already knew that the board was "supported". I built with the knowledge from a small shop dealer who also does linux sys admin. :^) btw: lost grub and the first ide harddrive went flakey. Hi Patrick, I don't know if every module under SUSE has the same name under ubuntu or not. And since there are dependencies to consider, you might find the 'lineup' changes considerably after just one (manual) module substitution. IOW, the differences you're seeing could be due to module names (speculation) or the correct 'parent' module(s) aren't being loaded. If it were my system, I'd inventory every module related to usb being loaded by ubuntu and carefully compare that list to those being loaded by SUSE, including dependencies. Excerpt from 'lsmod' on my system: Module Size Used by ohci_hcd 20228 0 usbcore 112512 3 usbhid,ohci_hcd This shows that 'usbhid' and 'ohci_hcd' are using usbcore. You want to look for comparable dependencies under both SUSE and ubuntu, then adjust the modules in SUSE accordingly. I believe you can make these changes in SUSE using the YaST module "/etc/sysconfig Editor". System > Kernel > INITRD_MODULES

What a pain! And, yes, it is a learning experience. At least we all know it's a moving target, too, if that makes you feel any better. ;-) regards, Carl

I was bit by this one recently. Try starting pcscd service. I noticed on my machine (10.1 x86_64 upgraded from 9.3) that usbfs was not being mounted after booting. A search in /etc/init.d allowed me to find it apparently now needs this smart card daemon now to mount usbfs (I think it used to be done in boot.localfs). Try that anyway. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871

Thanks, but the man and config files indicate that pcscd is *not* for usb. It was not running and starting it did not appear to make a difference. thanks again, -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Hi Patrick, Did you notice this? Knoppix loads: ohci_hcd,uhci_hcd,ehci_hcd Kubunto loads: ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd SUSE loads: ohci_hcd,ehci_hcd I wonder what would happen if you also added uhci_hcd to INITRD_MODULES? I suspect Joe's advice might be right on target since he's dealt with the same problem on comparable harware. But I thought I'd point this difference out in case it had missed your attention. Don't give up! regards, Carl

I tried rcpcscd status was unused. Started it but made no difference. Man and config files indicate it is *not* for usb :^(

Not yet, but reinstall is looking necessary. It still may be a missing kernel module, usblp got the printer recognized. Again, funny that the usb detection will *not* complete with the usb Epson 2400 scanner attached. I still do not understand why the usb modules were not present in the installed kernel ??? thanks, -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
