I'm not an expert but maybe you might want to take a look at the cloop feature/tools.
cloop-src - Source of the compressed loopback device module
cloop-utils - Tools for handling with cloop compressed volumes
If you find a better solution please let us know.

Unfortunately, it is useless. The "/usr/share/doc/packages/cloop/README" file says: | This is cloop, a Kernel module to add support for filesystem-independent, | transparently decompressed, read-only block devices.
