WINMODEM. Toshiba TECRA TE2100 and 8.2
Dear All, I have installed SUSE 8.2 on the above laptop and everything seems to work fine, except the modem! I understand that this is because this is a Winmodem. Can any one tell me how to get the modem working - I have looked at various websites incl linmodems and each time I come away more confused than I started. Please be gentle with me! Mike.

The first thing Michael needs to do is to identify his chipset. This can
be done by downloading the scanModem tool from Linmodems.org.
Then, once identified, find the correct driver (if there is one
available).
Installing the driver may be as simple as copying the driver into the
appropriate place in /lib/modules/2.xx.xx/... then updating modules.dep
and modules.conf. Or, he may need to compile the driver.
There should be more detailed instructions that come with the driver
itself.

Does it use a Rockwell/Conexant chip? If it does then there is the possibility that the driver for it may be available on www.linuxant.com . IF your SuSE 8.2 is running on the Athlon kernel then download the RPM for the GENERIC driver, and NOT the one under the SuSE8.2 heading because the RPM for 8.2 is not quite right and will not install. But try for yourself. Cheers. -- Computers are useless. They can only give you answers. Pablo Picasso

I daresay that there might be drivers to make the winmodem work. I have always found winmodems to be slow even with requisite drivers. A better option is to use a hardware modem, either with a serial interface or a pcmcia. On my Toshiba laptop, older pcmcia modems which have been bought second-hand work very well, are fast and the drivers are packaged with Linux distributions. on the other hand, if you do want to use the winmodem, find out the exact chipset and locate the Linux drivers, if available. There are 2 packages available for SuSE 8.2 under the kernel options. One for conextant hsf and one for soft-link amr/usb modems. These are the 2 main "generic" types of winmodems. There are also a few specific modem drivers for IBM laptops and such... I have no idea how well they work, b/c the modem in my laptop is a Lucent based chipset, but I suspect that since SuSE included them and forcasted there functionallity in an interview posted on www.newsforge.com I suspect they work. :) HTH, Travis.
