Is there any site that you could actually just type linux distro names and get like a "compare" just between your choices? Anyone here with experience or comments about Mandrake 9? Why not?
Sorry for the length of this response but If I tell the whole story then perhaps this thread won't run to long. It's rewarding to know that my sig is getting the attention I had hoped it would. When I was building my current machine back in Nov. I purchased about $700 (us) worth of parts from them. The first order was the motherboard ($110), when I checked w/ fedex and found that it was shipped the next morning I was so impressed that I decided to buy more of my parts from them. 2 orders in 2 days. (It's Important to note that googlegear limits the amount of time you have for returning a defective cpu or memory to 2 weeks.) The packages all arrived very quickly and I was quite impressed. I really didn't expect any problem. When I opened the motherboard and inspected it there was a dark grunge spot on one corner, I looked more closely and saw that the board had been severely arced in this location, I called gg and asked for an RMA# (The clock is ticking on any failure of the cpu or memory at this point). I sent the board back and waited...and waited. Having recieved my order so quickly I was kind of surprised at how long it was taking them to check my board out (I was tracking my package and rma#, fed ex delivered the package and recieved a signature but gg didn't acknowledge reciept for 2 additional days.). They never contacted me but 7 days after I had shipped there was a notation at their site that my order had been shipped. I thought, great, my replacement board is on the way (I still had faith in them...) As it turns out they decided to blame the customer "It is unlikely that the board left the manufacturer in a damaged condition..." Obviously they are claiming that I caused the arcing w/ my x-ray vision. (and apparantly my credit card company agrees) I am totally soured on online shopping now. Had my parts arrived undamaged I would be singing their praises. If I'd been able to get my parts locally (Gigabyte motherboards don't seem to be popular in Seattle) I probably wouldn't have tried googlegear, Had I recieved a damaged part from a local store I'm sure I would have recieved a replacement. So for $120.00 I got the right to tell my story to those who ask, and a Decorative Wall Hanging (motherboard). Since starting my education campaign I recieved an e-mail on another list from another googlegear customer who had an almost identical experience w/ them, If anyone else has had a similar experience I would love to hear it (off list), perhaps I could convince my credit card company tto work a little harder on my behalf. Thanks -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com!
Ricardo, I have Mandrake 9.0....As to your first question try www.osnews.com which has comparisons and do a search. I think the latest search is one on Suse 8.1 vs RedHat 8.0. Also, www.distrowatch.com is another resource to check out. I have Suse 8.1 on order from e-bay to test out. I bought the mandrake 8.2 in the box set and then upgraded to 9.0. I have not been able to get my cd burner to work with any of the cd burning front ends or even with terminal commands. Its a Mitsumi 48xate which should work. I have enjoyed the ease of disk partitioning and set up as well as the software manager but now my cups printer server has quit. Open office takes about 20-25 seconds to load and...dangit, I'm just tired of fartin around with it. So, I heard Suse was much more precision distro. If this one doesnt work, I'll have no choice but to reboot into windows again. I really like the stability that Linux seems to have but really dont want to spend ever night learning command line interface codes. NUTSHELL: Maybe I can comment on the SuSe in a few months. BTW, mandrake is in chapter 11 or the French equivalent at the present. You just can't give away everything and make a living business at it Doug
Mandrake recently filed for bankruptcy. I don't think I would base any systems on Mandrake at the moment. --doug, wa2say At 15:20 01/22/2003 -0800, Ricardo Rodriguez wrote:

Mainly because our customers didn't jump ship on us and we continued to use them as an example to gain new customers. We came out of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy a month ago and to tell the truth we've got a better bottom line then almost any telecom and pretty much no debt. So not that I like Mandrake or anything..but I wouldn't piss on the corpse yet. They may as of yet surprise people. They do good work, they just just don't do enough to make me wanna switch from SuSE. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe..
