Yeah i know i should/can post this to the MPlayer list but i thought since we have both Mplayer and Suse users in one place why not ask em. So here I am. I'm running the latest stable release of MPlayer (compiled on my machine with ALSA sound as well as some other options) and I'm struggling with DVD playback. Yes the DVD is ruunning from the Drive. I'm running Nvidia GeForce 2 with the drivers installed from NVidia's site. Machine is a 900MHz Athlon with 500 Meg ram. With a machine like this should I *really* be struggling with DVD playback? What could be causing the slow down. By 'slow down' i mean frames are being dropped badly. I've tried the 'cache' options as well as 'hardframedrop' but no show. it's so bad MPlayer pops up with a popup suggesting options which i've tried but to no avail. Any ideas? You don't mention it, so I have to ask: is DMA enabled on your DVD player? Also, what output plugin are you using? -vo xv is probably a good idea

Are you using SuSE 8.2? Maybe go into YaST and switch on DMA for the DVD? Or, if those don't work and there aren't any other suggestions from anyone else that help, maybe download Xine and try it and see if that works for you. You can get pretty much everything you need fro Xine here http://packman.links2linux.de/index.php4 (it's in german, but just use the Tools->Translate Webpage->german-to-english and you'll get an idea of what each thing is). Remember too, you'll need to get libdvdcss2, libfame, fame (just for good measure), the w32codecs, and because I couldn't get Xine to start, I got gxine, and that did the trick for me. Watched my first two DVD movies last night on Xine as a matter of fact (first two dvd movies I've *ever* seen actually, heh). If anything is missing, it'll tell you during compilation or installation I mean (I used only the .src.rpm's whenever I could). Good luck and holler back if you need more help, these guys on this list are a great bunch of people. John - -- A butterfly is: Pretty,soft,harmless...and useless, just like M$N. I can confirm that this helps vastly - I've been unable to coax previous versions of SuSE and MPlayer to play DVDs at anything like reasonable speed, but with 8.2 it finally works :-) With one exception - does MPlayer (or anything else) support DVD menus? Failing that, does anyone know how to identify the track that actually contains the movie? ;-) John -- John Pettigrew Headstrong Games john@headstrong-games.co.uk Fun : Strategy : Price http://www.headstrong-games.co.uk/ Board games that won't break the bank Valley of the Kings: ransack an ancient Egyptian tomb but beware of mummies!

John Xine supports dvd menus. Get it from packaman. You can select all the lib and xine packages using synaptic if you install apt for SuSE. Then first run xine-check and set dma from one of the recommended options. I use hparm to do that. The xine version on the 8.2 discs is broken as is the mplayer as well. I've nevr got mplayer to do anything so I just use xine. Mike
Hi all: I upgraded from 8.0 to 8.2 recently. While I am pretty happy with the upgrade (and the fact that it didn't blow away my /etc configs, or kill off my /home directory), I have had a few odd KDE-related issues with my general-use user account. So much so that I figured it would easier to create a new user and have a fresh start. A quick question: Where are the various KDE-related settings kept? I want to import my Kmail settings and e-mail rules to my new account, as well as my Konqueror settings, etc. I've dug through the /$home/.kde directory, and haven't seen anything that really stands out. Ideas? Tks. Cheers, Todd

Most of them - if not all - are in $HOME/.kde/share/config
I want to import my Kmail settings and e-mail rules to my new account,
$HOME/.kde/share/config/kmailrc make sure everything kmail related is closed down when you copy it Also, only do this if your kde in 8.0 was upgraded to the latest version. If you were running 2.x or 3.0.x I'm not sure it will work. In that case you may be better off creating a default config by launching kmail, closing it and editing the config, copying what you want in a text editor
as well as my Konqueror settings,
Those are more spread out. $HOME/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc has some, but not all the settings. look at the other files in the config directory starting with konq*

Try "-vo opengl/xv/vesa/x11" in that order for video output and include "-cache 4096" on the command line. This shall provide you small buffering of 4 MB. Recommended for use over networks, but with this option, my P3-450 plays DVDs really well. Also, enable DMA for DVD drive too.
