OpenOffice sometimes reeeeallyyyyy slooooooow?
I remember someone posting to the mailing list a while back about a problem with OpenOffice being really sluggish, something about a kernel conflict. I didn't think much of it at the time, as I wasn't having trouble with OpenOffice... but I've just experienced the second period of extreme lag with the program. (The first I cleared up with a reboot, but that's the Windows Way of solving problems...) Anybody remember this problem and know a solution?

Seems to work fine for me on a vanilla 2.4.21 kernel -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
I remember the topic. I found when you have a background task like SETI@home, Folding@home, or the distributed.net client Open Office is next to unusable. I have good news the latest release candidate of Open Office 1.1 doesn't have have that problem on my PC. I would grab the newest Open Office release candidate if you have a fast enough connection. Lots of other fixes, worth the time to get. On Friday 25 July 2003 02:10 am, Fred M. Sloniker wrote:

There was a problem with the internal GUI code in OOo conflicting with the newer kernel schedulers, which I think SuSE include in their 2.4.2x kernel. This means that even under moderate system load, OOo works painfully slowly. http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=9277 for the gory details. The good news is that it is fixed in the new 1.1RC. Download RC2 from the Openoffice.org website. It's a lot faster starting now, looks a lot better, and has a load of nice improvements. Jason
OpenOffice being really sluggish . . . I've just experienced the second period of extreme lag with the program. . . .
I've got the impression that OOo is extraordinarily sensitive to excessive use of resources by competing programs. Or perhaps it's sensitivity to odd behavior by Konqueror -- anyway, it has always been Konqueror that has been causing the problem. I've zapped Konqueror, let OOo proceed, and restarted Konqueror.
