Hey Group: What in the world is going on with 8.2. It seems that a lot of thing are failing. The most recent is "chroot". Yes! it is requested to change "/" (root) to /media/hdb1 which is a mounted reiser file system. chroot /media/hdb1 cd /media/hdb1 shows all files and directoies. ERROR /bin/bash: error while loading shared libraries: libncurses.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory /tmp # ldd /lib/libncurses.so.5.3 libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40075000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x80000000) This same process worked great in 8.0. As a note this hdb drive has had nothing done on it since 8.0 was upgraded to 8.2. -- 73 de Donn Washburn __ " http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 a MSDOS Virus "Free Zone" OS Email: n5xwb@hal-pc.org Info: http://www.knoppix.net

Symlink libncurses.so.5.3 to libncurses.so.5, run ldconfig and you should be fine. Charles -- Your job is being a professor and researcher: That's one hell of a good excuse for some of the brain-damages of minix. (Linus Torvalds to Andrew Tanenbaum)

Wrong answer :) If libncurses.so.5.3 does have a soname of libncurses.so.5, that symlink should actually already exist as ldconfig creates them when it's run. In general, one should *never* manually set the symlink. Philipp

what does ldd /media/hdb1/lib/libncurses.so.5.3 say? Note that when you do chroot, all needed libraries must be in the chroot environment. Philipp
Hey Phillipp: I fixed it! some how the drive was not cleaned properly. fsck.reiser /mnt/hdb1 fixed it. The error just lead me a stray. Philipp Thomas wrote:

I'm Having a problem installing SUSE 8.2 pro.. It all install but when the X server starts it come up to a blank screen and the monitor goes into standby mode. Any thoughts on were to look for the problem? I tried bringing up the YaST2 from run level 3 but it would not let me change anything.. YaST has my monitor listed a VESA when in fact it is an SVGA to that may be the problem, but how do I change it? Thanks for any help Dave .

Try (on runlevel 3): sax2 -- reinit

Or manually editing /etc/X11/XF86Config -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
